Kevin Mirocha took his maiden Formula 2 win at Brands Hatch following a peerless drive in very testing wet conditions.
The Pole made a superb start to dive between front row men Luciano Bacheta and Max Snegirev, both of whom were slow away. Mirocha had to contend with two safety car periods, but was faultless at both restarts and extended his lead past six seconds as he cruised to a brilliant first win.
Matheo Tuscher finished second, taking the position with a start the equal of Mirocha’s. He spent the majority of the race holding off Bacheta, who fought his way into third after his tardy start. The podium finish maintained his championship lead at 39.5 points.
Briton Hector Hurt passed Mihai Marinescu for fourth on the 11th lap, but hopes of sealing his best-ever F2 result ended when he ran wide at Druids. He finished seventh. Marinescu held on to fourth.
The first of the two safety car periods came after David Zhu crashed at Graham Hill, the second effectively happened before the race even restarted. Running an excellent fourth, Snegirev got sideways as he came on to the start/finish straight. Unsighted in the spray Alex Fontana and Kourosh Khani ploughed into the Russian. Fortunately all three were unhurt.
From last on the grid Markus Pommer took fifth, while a late error dropped title hopeful Christopher Zanella to sixth.
