Cadre of Ford Focuses Invade 2011 SEMA Show

The Blue Oval?s excellent new small car gets the SEMA treatment, times seven. The 2012 Focus is the Blue Oval?s most recently launched product, so it makes sense that Ford is bringing more of them to SEMA than any other model. There are in fact seven: six hatchbacks and one sedan, worked over by familiar [...]

Q and A: Massa on Hamilton clash

Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton came together for the sixth time this season in the Indian Grand Prix. In previous incidents, it has been Hamilton who has received the lion's share of criticism and sanction, but in India the stewards gave Massa a drive-through penalty - a decision the Ferrari driver vehemently disagreed with.

Vincent Storms Through Road Atlanta

Brad Vincent put on one of most dominating performances of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2011 Season Three schedule at Road Atlanta this week. When drivers showed up for the “Panoz F1 GP at Road Atlanta”, they knew Vincent would be riding a wave of momentum due to his victory at Laguna Seca the previous week. What they couldn’t have known however, was just how futile their hopes of knocking him off the top spot would be in Georgia. Vincent used the practice and qualifying sessions to serve notice that anyone hoping to earn a win at Road Atlanta would have to go through him. He was the only driver to post a sub-1:02 lap time in either session, and his qualifying lap time of 1:01.428 was a full second [...]

Adrian Sutil - 9th: "It was quite a good race and I think we can be happy with the two points today. In the early laps I struggled with the rear of the car, with a bit of oversteer, and could not hold off the Toro Rossos who were a bit quicker today. But in the second and third stint the car balance improved and I was able to keep the Sauber [Perez] behind me in the closing laps.

SEMA: Toyota unloads bounty of SEMA rides

Yaris B-Spec

Toyota is bringing an arsenal of custom vehicles to SEMA 2011, including three pickups and one very cool Yaris B-Spec Racer. The pint-sized bruiser is based on the 2012 Yaris SE and should be bashing fenders with the rest of the SCCA B-Spec class contenders soon. Toyota says that Jamie Bestwick, of BMX fame, will campaign the car in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America in Elkhart, Wisconsin. The car features all of the hardware necessary to meet spec, including an eight-point SCCA roll cage, fire-suppression system, race seat, and six-point harness.

Toyota also has something special for those of you who prefer to take your racing off the track. The Long Beach Racers Tacoma is inspired by the upcoming Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series, and features custom 60mm Bilstein race shocks, 35-inch BF Goodrich tires, a 50-gallon fuel cell and a big-brake kit among other goodies. All of that kit will come to bear when the truck heads to the Baja 1000 next year.

DC Shoes and West Coast Customs will also show off a unique Toyota Tundra built just for the motocross crowd while Oakley crafted a special Surf Tacoma to cater to the surfers of the world. A pre-production version of the Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series pickup will also be on display as will the Camry Daytona 500 pace car.

Sauber faces ?tough? fight in final races

Sauber faces a "tough" fight in the final three races of the season as it fights for sixth in the Constructors' Championship, according to Sergio Perez. The Swiss team is currently seventh in the standings, nine points behind Force India and three ahead of Scuderia Toro Rosso and has scored only five points in the last six races. But Perez is optimistic that Sauber will be points contenders in this weekend's Indian Grand Prix after enduring an uncompetitive weekend in Korea, where set-up problems held the team back .

Official: 2012 Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain recalled over tire pressure monitors

2011 Chevrolet Equinox

2010 GMC TerrainGeneral Motors is recalling nearly 34,000 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers over improperly calibrated tire pressure monitoring sensors.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the monitors are required to be calibrated to illuminate a warning light any time a tire is inflated to 25 percent below the recommended level. The sensors in 2012 Equinox and Terrain models may not illuminate until the tire is much further below that threshold. NHTSA says that improperly inflated tires could lead to an accident due to premature wear and excess heat.

In addition, improperly inflated tires can reduce fuel economy and result in poor handling as well. GM will update the body control module on affected vehicles free of charge once the recall gets under way this month.

Of course, this is as good of a time as any to remind drivers to always check their tire pressure at regular intervals, regardless of what the light on the dash says. Hit the jump to see the full recall notice for yourself.

Merhi on poles again in Germany

Roberto Merhi captured another pair of pole positions for the F3 Euro Series finale at Hockenheim. The 20-year-old Spaniard, who wrapped up the title at his home circuit of Valencia last time out, appeared to be in a class of his own as he took his Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes to the top of the timesheets within the first 10 minutes of the session. Report: One-third of red light camera violators in LA opting not to pay voluntary citations

Filed under:

red light camera
Red light traffic cameras can be a real pain in the butt. The fines can be outrageous, the points lead to higher insurance rates and the programs can even take hard-working police officers off the streets. But what happens if you simply throw the ticket in the trash? In Los Angeles County, the answer seems to be a whole lot of nothing.

The Newspaper reports that red light camera revenue is down by one third after LA Police Commissioner Alan Skoban called the cameras "a voluntary citation program" back on June 7. The cameras have already been shut down in Los Angeles, but surrounding cities are losing boat-loads of dough. Since that June announcement, photo enforcement vendors are reportedly losing $1 million per month.

Still, while red light camera tickets are down, they're certainly not out. Drivers still paid 25,693 tickets at nearly $500 a pop from May through September. That's nearly $30 million over the course of a full year, which gets split between municipalities and the traffic camera system companies.

We're not sure what is more noteworthy - red light cameras that dole out $500 tickets, or ticked motorists that continue to pay outrageous fines even though the program is "voluntary." It appears the moral fiber of this country is still high... or not enough motorists know that the tickets don't have to be paid.

Rule tweak ?won?t change? Talladega

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers do not expect Sunday's race at Talladega to be affected by new technical rules after testing the changes during Friday's practice sessions. Hoping to limit the tandem style of drafting that has prevailed at Daytona and Talladega this year, NASCAR issued a new restrictor-plate for this weekend's race, with an increase of 1/64th of an inch in the diameter of the plate holes which gives around a seven to 10 horsepower boost. Additionally a new calibration for the pop-off valve that controls maximum pressure in the radiator was also set in order to try to prevent drivers from pushing each other for as long as they have done in previous restrictor-plate races this year

Marquez to stay in Moto2 next season

Spanish rider Marc Marquez will stay in Moto2 next season, ruling out an early move to MotoGP despite his impressive campaign. The 18-year-old has won seven races in his debut season in Moto2 and is just three points behind Stefan Bradl in the standings after his charge from 38th to third in last weekend's Australian Grand Prix. Marquez's superb season has led to speculation about a possible move to MotoGP next year, but the Spaniard on Thursday confirmed he will compete in Moto2 again in 2012.

Confirmed: Honda bringing Crosstourer Concept to production

Honda Crosstourer Concept

Honda has announced that the company will bring a version of the company's Crosstourer Concept motorcycle unveiled at the 2010 EICMA Show to production. The final version of the adventure/sports tourer hybrid will be unveiled under the lights of the 2011 EICMA show next month. According to Honda, the Crosstourer will boast a 1200cc V4 engine borrowed from the company's VFR1200F, which means the bike could boast up to 170 horsepower. Combined with a more upright riding position, off-road aesthetics and a long-travel suspension, Honda hopes that the Crosstourer will be a more versatile addition to the company's stable. There's also word that the production version will come equipped with a dual-clutch transmission.

The Crosstourer Concept wore styling that appeared to be heavily influenced by the BMW GS family, which certainly doesn't bother us in the least. With its wire spoke wheels, near vertical windscreen and subtle skid plates, the bike looks to be a legitimate alternative to the rest of the adventure bike set. But, as we all know, looks aren't everything. We'll have to wait until we get our gloves on the final version before we can say one way or the other whether the bike can hold its fenders high against the likes of the Triumph Tiger and BMW GS lines. Hit the jump for the official press release.

Libyan battle dozer

These men are, or at least were until recently, Libyan rebels in battle against the dwindling forces of the now-deceased Muammar Gaddafi. And the red, black and green lump they're standing in front of was once a bulldozer.

It was transformed in the city of Misrata from a plain old earth-mover into a battlewagon: steel-plates sandwich reinforced with concrete. The only views outside were through portholes just big enough for gun barrels and RPGs.

It was built to take Tripoli but wasn't called into action, instead being trekked to Sirte to defend against snipers and push through barricades. Obviously, it didn't fail. There's a vid of the concrete leviathan after the jump.

Coulthard: STR spell showed Vettel skill

Sebastian Vettel has already proved he can deal with not having the best car of the field, reckons David Coulthard. Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn said last week that the test of Vettel's true skill will come when he does not have the fastest car in Formula 1, unlike over the past two years. "For Sebastian, what will come now, which will be an interesting phase of his career, will be when he has not got the best car," said Brawn

Official: Ford confirms $1.1B investment to build Transit van in Kansas City

Ford Transit Van

Ford has confirmed that its Transit van will be manufactured in Kansas City. The company plans to invest $1.1 billion in facility upgrades and tooling to produce both the next-generation F-150 and the Transit in preparation for the van's arrival on U.S. soil in 2013. That investment is $700 million more than Ford had previously allocated for its Kansas City facility. Ford says the extra cash will go toward new paint and body shops in addition to an integrated stamping plant. The upgrades will also allow Ford to increase F-150 pickup production with the addition of a second manufacturing shift.

Previously, we had heard word that Ford would embrace the T-Series naming convention for the Transit, with models breaking down into trim levels similar to what's seen on the current F-Series, though the press release after the jump specifically refers to the new van as the Transit. Does that mean Ford will rely on a new system of trim designation for the van? It's hard to say, but either way, it certainly sounds like the days of the E-Series/Econoline range are numbered. Hit the jump to see the full press release for yourself.

FIA in engine-mapping clampdown

Formula 1 teams have been told that there will be stricter limitations on engine mapping next year, as part of a clampdown by the FIA to prevent teams exploiting exhausts gases. Although moves to outlaw blown diffusers have already resulted in teams being forced to run with periscope exhausts in 2012, there have been mounting concerns that some outfits are still trying to exploit loopholes in this area of the regulations. Earlier this week, Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn voiced his fears on the matter - especially because it had become clear to everyone this year just what benefit can be had from using exhaust gases for improved aerodynamic performance
