McLaren gaining confidence for 2012

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has urged his outfit to go on the attack this winter to build a Red Bull beater, amid growing confidence over early progress with its 2012 challenger. Although Red Bull Racing dominated 2011, securing both championships before the end of the campaign, Whitmarsh sees no reason why his team cannot overhaul its rival to stop RBR claiming a third consecutive crown. "They have done a very good job in terms of performance and reliability, but it can change," said Whitmarsh.

Red Bull: Brazil win will boost Webber

Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner believes that Mark Webber will head into the winter with fresh confidence for next year, on the back of his victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix. Webber triumphed at Interlagos after team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered gearbox problems, but despite the circumstances of his win Horner believes the win will be enough to lift his confidence ahead of 2012. "It is great that Mark has won a race," explained Horner.

Vettel grabs record-breaking pole

Sebastian Vettel flew to a record 15th pole position of the 2011 season with an imperious performance in Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying at Interlagos. The world champion topped Q2 then absolutely dominated Q3. Vettel's initial 1m12.268s effort put him a quarter of a second clear of the pack, and he then improved to 1m11.918s with his final attempt.

McLaren in no rush over Hamilton deal

McLaren is in no rush to sort out a fresh contract extension with Lewis Hamilton, despite suggestions the former world champion is ready to commit his future to the Woking-based outfit. Hamilton's current deal with McLaren runs out at the end of next season, and there has been speculation he could then be in the frame for a switch to Red Bull Racing ever since he held secret talks with its team principal Christian Horner at the Canadian Grand Prix. But even though McLaren has already tied down Jenson Button's long-term future, it appears that a decision on Hamilton's plight will now wait until the 2012 campaign is under way

Aussies play at Home

Week Four of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series by Bigpond Sport moved to the iRacing V8 spiritual home of Phillip Island. This track always brings out a blockbuster and with the added bonus of pitstops, some guaranteed drama. For the early race at 7.45, Shane Van Gisbergen trounced the field by 17 seconds from Rens Broekman and Richard Hamstead. Hamstead pitted early to attempt an undercut, but when almost everybody pitted on Lap 20, The Giz emerged in the lead and was never headed. Bigpond’s Vern Norrgard had a stellar run, finishing fourth. In the other splits, Clayton Brooks and Andrew Cooper were triumphant. But the 9.45 race was the Big One, with a field strength of over 4000. Madison Down took pole position for Trans-Tasman Racing, while Tatts.com Racing’s [...]

Alonso: Ferrari will fight back in ?12

Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari is on-track to return to Formula 1 world championship contention in 2012, after a year spent struggling to match the pace of key rivals Red Bull and McLaren. The 30-year-old Spaniard, speaking ahead of the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix which takes place at Interlagos in Brazil on Sunday, said that he has seen significant improvement in Ferrari this season and that what he knew of next year's challenger had convinced him he could fight for a title again next year. "I am confident to be fighting for the world championship again next year and what makes me confident is that I am with Ferrari," Alonso told reporters.

Horner wants FOTA progress on RRA

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has urged fellow Formula 1 bosses to be 'open minded' in a crunch meeting about the future of the sport's Resource Restriction Agreement, which takes place in Brazil on Friday. The Formula One Teams' Association is due to meet in downtown Sao Paulo to discuss the RRA, with disagreements about its scope and implementation having yet to be resolved. The issue has become so important that there have been concerns that if no deal is reached on RRA then it could threaten the future of FOTA itself.

Sauber buoyed by Abu Dhabi pace

Peter Sauber is more encouraged about his team's Constructors' Championship fight with Scuderia Toro Rosso because of the speed his car showed in Abu Dhabi, than the fact it now holds a one-point advantage over its rivals. With Sauber locked in a close battle with Toro Rosso for seventh place in the Constructors' Championship, which could be worth around $3 million in prize money, both outfits are aware of the importance of delivering a good result in Brazil this weekend. But although the Swiss squad pulled out a single point advantage in Abu Dhabi, Sauber says that more crucial than that is the fact that the C31 had the pace at the Yas Marina circuit to beat its rival

Official: Audi A6 tops Consumer Reports luxury sedan comparo

2012 Audi A6

Consumer Reports has just finished evaluating four mid-sized luxury sedans, and the 2012 Audi A6 managed to tie with the Infiniti M37 for the top spot. The publication cites the German four-door's substantial improvements over last year as the reason behind its success.

In previous evaluations, the A6 has managed to score just 79 points on the CR scale. This year, that number jumped to 93. The A6 garnered praise for its strong acceleration, apt handling, comfortable ride and quiet, well-appointed interior. Those are all attributes we're inclined to agree with.

The A6 didn't take the top nod when it came to fuel economy, however. Consumer Reports says that the Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec remains king of that hill by returning an average of 26 miles per gallon. The full report is expected to land on news stands on December 6, though readers may get an early scoop by checking the final results on ConsumerReports.com right now. Hit the jump for the full press release.

The CAFE Numbers Game: Making Sense of the New Fuel-Economy Regulations

Obama announces proposal to raise the auto industry?s mpg requirement to 54.5 by 2025. It was less than two years ago that the Obama administration implemented new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations that boosted the auto industry?s mandatory overall fleet mpg from 25.3 in 2010 to 34.1 by 2016. Huff battled pain to grab Macau pole

Rob Huff has revealed that he had to battle the pain barrier as he grabbed pole position for the World Touring Car Championship finale in Macau on Friday. Huff was locked in a tight tussle with Chevrolet team-mate and title rival Yvan Muller for the top spot in Q2 - and delivered a brilliant effort to grab the top spot despite brushing the barriers at the exit of the final corner. But the real reason for that late incident was that Huff was struck down with cramp for the final corners of the lap - which meant he could not feel his right foot.

Future-tech?s holy trinity makes for a more efficient base 5-series, but not necessarily a better one. Massa hopes for ?very different? 2012

Felipe Massa is hoping for a "very different sort of championship" in 2012 following a difficult season for him and his Ferrari team this year. While Ferrari has won just one race this year, Massa has been overshadowed by team-mate Fernando Alonso, and he faces the prospect of finishing the season without a podium ahead of the final race of the year in Brazil. Massa, however, says he is determined to turn his fortunes around in 2012 and is aiming to start the year strongly.

Report: NASCAR Sprint Cup season ends in nail-biting climax at Homestead [spoilers]

Filed under:

2011 Ford 400 at Homestead

Ties don't typically happen in racing. Other sports, sure, but not motorsports. Because while the issue can sometimes come down to a fraction of a second, someone always crosses the finish line first. And when it comes to championship points, someone always comes out ahead. Well, almost always.

In a stunning, nail-biting end to the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Tony Stewart clinched his third title. But it sure didn't come easy.

Entering this weekend's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway three points behind his chief rival Carl Edwards, Stewart was at a big disadvantage, starting from 15th place on the grid. He then suffered some major setbacks over the course of the race, dropping one, two or even three laps behind his rivals as flying debris caused damage to the front end of his Chevrolet Impala, causing him to pit an extra two times.

However, Stewart overcame the odds, pulling off 118 passes to catch up with and then pass Edwards for the lead. Over 267 laps, the lead changed a record 26 times, but it was Stewart who took the checkered flag. The win itself, however, wasn't enough to decide the title, as it left Stewart and Edwards tied for points. The decision came down to race wins, as Stewart's five wins in the Chase trumped Edwards' single regular-season win. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was all she wrote.

Study: Hybrid drivers are safer from injury in a crash

honda civic hybrid crash

Hybrid models have the advantage of fuel economy over their gas-only siblings, but it appears that batteries and electric motors make them safer as well. The Highway Loss Data Institute studied 25 2003 to 2011 vehicles that featured both conventional and hybrid powertrains (example: Honda Civic and Honda Civic Hybrid). The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight were not included in the study since neither vehicle has a conventionally-powered counterpart.

The data shows that occupants are 27 percent less likely to be injured if they're in the hybrid version of the vehicle. There are several reasons why the hybrid is safer, but the biggest factor is weight. Heavier cars are safer than lighter vehicles, since the added mass means that the heavier vehicle will transfer force to the lighter vehicle. That's good for occupants and insurance companies, as the hybrids need 25 percent less personal injury protection than their conventional counterparts.

But while hybrids have proven to be safer than their non-hybrid counterparts, the story isn't as good for pedestrian crashes. HDLI finds that hybrid vehicles are 20 percent more likely to be involved in pedestrian crashes with injuries. The study claims that pedestrians might get involved in more accidents with hybrids because they can't hear the cars when they're in electric mode. We'd add that low rolling resistance tires often contribute to longer braking distances, and the heavier hybrids are also slower and less maneuverable than their non-hybrid counterparts.

Hit the jump to read over the details of the study.

Video: Three killed in 52-car autobahn crash

A minor two-car accident on a German autobahn turned into a 52-car pileup with three deaths and two dozen injuries on Friday night. On a stretch of A31 not far from the Dutch border, two sedans got into a "harmless fender bender" in heavy fog. A German newspaper report said traffic isn't normally heavy there, so it could have taken a few minutes as 50 more cars plowed into that original incident.

Two of the deaths occurred after two drivers left their cars and perhaps sought safety behind a guardrail; they were found under another car that had flipped the barrier. The final fatality was found in his car that had slid down an incline beside the road.

"Autobahn" describes any German highway and most are speed limited, so this isn't necessarily about unrestricted speed. Investigators don't yet know what caused the accident, but another German report claims that police are investigating for potential manslaughter charges. Follow the jump for a video of the aftermath.

NASCAR working on tandem drafts

Drivers and NASCAR officials say they are still looking for ways to limit tandem racing at restrictor plate tracks following a Sprint Cup Series test at Daytona on Tuesday. Six drivers ran on the 2.5-mile high banks trying different restrictor plates, spoilers and suspension settings among other possible solutions as NASCAR hopes to at least limit the two-car drafting that has prevailed this year both at the Florida track and Talladega.

Nasr out to end Carlin?s Macau drought

British Formula 3 champion Felipe Nasr has high hopes that his Carlin team can end its decade-long victory drought in this weekend's Macau Grand Prix. Carlin has not triumphed in the blue-riband F3 event since Takuma Sato delivered a memorable triumph back in 2001, shortly before he made the move into F1. But on the back of a dominant season in British F3, which saw the team take the top three positions overall, Nasr thinks that Carlin is ready to get firmly in the victory mix this weekend.

Rick Kelly takes victory in rain

Rick Kelly took victory in the wet in the first of this weekend's Sandown V8 Supercar races, as points leader Jamie Whincup tumbled back to 13th place and lost ground to title rival Craig Lowndes. That championship twist had looked highly unlikely after qualifying, when Whincup had joined Kelly on the front row and his Triple Eight Holden team-mate Lowndes had struggled to 27th. But while Whincup quickly recovered from fourth to second following a slow start, as the race progressed he steadily lost ground - dropping back at restarts particularly in an event that featured three safety car interruptions, and admitting that the ever-worsening conditions had made him very uneasy

Official: Volkswagen eT! electric delivery van is out of this world

Volkswagen eT Van

The writer F. Scott Fitzgerald once opined that using an exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke. With that in mind, let's take a look at the latest work van concept from Volkswagen. The German Automaker has partnered with the German Post Office and the University of Art at Braunschweig to create the eT! electric delivery van. The company says that vehicle offers zero-emissions driving and can be operated by a joystick-type device on the passenger side if necessary. We aren't entirely sure how that second feature lends itself to making deliveries any easier, but we applaud the automaker's efforts toward facilitating practical jokers everywhere.

Perhaps more impressive is the fact that VW says that the eT! can be operated semi-autonomously. The vehicle can follow a delivery person from house to house or return to the driver after being parked. While there are no details currently available on the vehicle's drivetrain, Volkswagen does say that the eT! is equipped with electronically opening doors. Hit the jump for the press release.
