Bottas says he needs to race in 2013

Valtteri Bottas Valtteri Bottas says he needs to get racing in 2013 if he is to continue his development as a driver.

With the Finn understood to be closing in on a deal to join Pastor Maldonado at Williams next year, he reckons another season just as third driver would be of little use to him.

“I need to get racing and F1 is the place I want to be,” Bottas said when asked by AUTOSPORT about whether he felt it essential he raced next year.

“I just need to drive more. This year already, this second half of the season, when there were big gaps between Fridays, it started to feel more and more difficult to find the rhythm quickly, especially when it was a new circuit to learn.

“So really I need to get to drive more because it is not easy to keep up and improve.

“Many times the case was in the second half of the season that just when you got a good rhythm or understood a track, then the tyres were finished.”

Bottas, who has little sponsorship backing, is believed to be the favoured option to partner Maldonado in 2013 following his performances on grand prix Fridays this year.

The man himself thinks he did everything he could to prove to Williams that his talent justifies a race seat, and he feels he has the potential to do even better with more mileage under his belt.

“I hope they see that I will do really well, and I know there is much more to come if I can drive more,” he said.

“I hope the team can see that there is much more to improve.

“It has not always been about showing quick lap times [on Fridays], because there have been many times when it has been about gathering data and useful information from practice one. “

Bruno Senna, who drove the second Williams in 2012, is understood to be a strong contender to drive at either Caterham or Force India for next season.

Tony Stewart Racing Seeking Ultimate Bragging Rights for 2012
As Outlaws Close Campaign at Charlotte's World Finals

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 30, 2012) - The achievement most competitors strive for is to be named champion at season's end. It's a goal not easily accomplished but remarkably rewarding when a driver and his team is hoisting the coveted trophy when the dust settles.

The 2012 World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series season concludes this weekend with the PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals presented by NAPA Auto Parts. Following Saturday night's final 30-lap A-Feature of the season, there will be a familiar face ready to accept the hardware at The Dirt Track @ Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Tony Stewart Racing's (TSR) Donny Schatz can clinch his fifth WoO championship Thursday by simply making a qualifying lap behind the wheel of the TSR No. 15 STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J, and the Fargo, N.D., racer would like nothing more than to put an exclamation point on a championship season by duplicating his sweep of the World Finals in 2011.

Twenty-time WoO champion Steve Kinser finished second to his TSR teammate Schatz in last year's season finale and looks to close his season on a high note by finishing one spot better in the World Finals this weekend in his TSR No. 11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim.

Only one driver can win the final race of the season and, since the first World Finals in 2007, Schatz and Kinser have earned three of the five checkered flags. Kinser won the finale in 2007 while Schatz was victorious in 2008 and 2011. The event, which includes WoO Sprint Cars, WoO Late Models and the Big-Block Modifieds from the Super DIRTcar Series, begins with a pair of qualifying sessions for the Sprint Cars and Late Models Thursday. Complete programs with heat races, a dash and feature races will be held both Friday and Saturday.

Schatz is the only driver to make all 30 WoO features at the 4/10-mile Charlotte dirt oval, which opened in May 2000. He won his first race at the track in October 2000 and, since 2003, hasn't finished outside the top-eight in 18 races. He clinched his third WoO title, and first with TSR, by leading all 30 laps of the season finale in 2008. In May 2010, he led 29 of 30 laps to earn his fourth win at the track. And last fall, he won both nights of the World Finals to increase his win tally at the track to six, most by any driver. Earlier this year, Schatz drove the STP machine from the ninth starting position and finished second.

Kinser will be looking to win at Charlotte for the third time this weekend. His first triumph came in October 2000 and his most recent victory at the facility closed the 2007 campaign. He has 18 top-five finishes in 29 starts. The Bloomington, Ind., native has finished second at the track eight times, including last year's runner-up finish in the finale. In May, he raced from the sixth starting position and raced his way into the lead during the 30-lap A-Feature, but a blown left-rear tire ended his chances at victory.

The two A-Features this weekend will be races 73 and 74 of the 2012 WoO season. Schatz finished second in a pair of races Oct. 13 at I-55 Raceway near St. Louis to continue an incredible streak of consistency since July 29. The STP driver has finished inside the top-five 25 times in the last 29 races, and those results, which also include victories in the Knoxville (Iowa) Nationals and Williams Grove (Pa.) National Open, have been the difference in the title chase. For the season, Schatz has earned 11 victories, 39 top-fives and 60 top-10s, which has helped him build a 176-point advantage over Craig Dollansky in the championship standings. Kinser, who scored his most recent win Oct. 6 when he raced to victory at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y., has four wins, 26 top-fives and 47 top-10s on the season. "The King of the Outlaws" ranks fifth in the championship standings and is guaranteed a fifth-place finish.

Saturday's 2012 WoO season finale will be broadcast live on SPEED beginning at 8 p.m. EDT.

On Thursday, the pit gates will open at 11 a.m. EDT, with the grandstands opening at 4 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, the pit gates will open at 12:45 p.m. with the grandstands opening at 4 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. For more details and ticket information, call the track at 800-455-3267 or visit www.CharlotteMotorSpeedway.com/Dirt.

Race fans unable to attend this weekend's races can catch all of the action on DIRTVision.com. Fans can listen live as Johnny Gibson, "Voice of the Outlaws," calls the action as he does at all WoO Sprint Series events on the DIRTVision.com cybercast, as well as on the DIRT Radio Network. Humpe’s Homestead Homerun

Week Three of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (open setup) took the online racers to the Homestead-Miami Speedway for some high speed, side-by-side racing at one of the trickiest tracks on the NASCAR circuit. While this track may be tricky for some, it proved to be no challenge for a name frequently seen gracing the pages of inRacingNews.com.

1,020 sim racers attempted to tackle the 1.5-mile progressively banked speedway in search of victory in the week’s highest Strength of Field race. During the 3345 SoF, Ohio native Kenny Humpe made a late race pass to take the victory by 0.611 seconds over second place Edward Szigeti (New Jersey), who paced the field for 61 of the race’s 90 laps. Third place went to Chris Mathis (Mid-South) who finished 0.646 seconds behind race winner Humpe. Fourth place went to Robert Bearss (Michigan) and rounding out the top five was Paulo Van Der Velden (Benelux).

By taking the victory in the week’s highest Strength of Field race, Humpe earned the most championship points at Homestead, adding 202 to his season total. Second place in the SoF race netted 197 points for Szigeti, good for P2 in the week’s standings. Justin Brooks (Carolina) ended the week in the third position, also earning 197 championship points. Kollin Keister (Atlantic) finished in the fourth position with 190 points and filling out the top five was  Chris Mathis.

Humpe came out on top of more than 1000 sim-racers at Homestead.

On top of having a great showing in the weekly standings, Brooks also had an excellent qualifying effort on the week.  His time of 31.556 seconds placed him in position one out of 311 online racers who attempted to qualify during Week Three. Australian sim racer Ray Schroder finished-off the week in the second position with a time of 31.604 seconds. Keith Elliott (Western Canada) ended the week in the third position while Arthur Lucas (Virginias) and Gary Fridinger (Pennsylvania) finished in the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

By earning the most points during the week, Humpe stretched his lead in the season standings to 64 over Phil Brown (Mid-South). Corey A Wolf (New York) currently holds down the third position (-67). Kollin Keister ends Week Three 69 points back in the fourth position and rounding out the top five is Keith Elliott (-77).

Keep glued to inRacingNews as Week Four of the NiCCS (open setup) heads to the famous Rockingham Speedway for what is sure to be a slick and bumpy ride.

Kurt Busch Posts 8th-Place Result in Wild Finish at Phoenix

Kurt Busch (Furniture Row) - Photo Credit: Jerry Markland/Getty Images
AVONDALE, Ariz. (Nov. 11, 2012) – In a madcap final-lap ending that saw numerous cars spinning and crashing, a resilient Kurt Busch drove his heavily damaged Furniture Row/Farm American Chevrolet — that was shooting out flames — to an eighth-place finish in Sunday’s AdvoCare 500 Sprint Cup Series race.

The finish was the second straight eighth-place result for Busch, giving Furniture Row Racing its best back-to-back finishes in the team’s history.

Busch, who was competing in his fifth race with Furniture Row Racing, found himself right in the middle of a multicar wreck on the final lap of the green-white-checkered overtime finish at Phoenix International Raceway.

Though his No. 78 Chevrolet took a severe hit by Greg Biffle’s No. 16 car and then proceeded to tag the concrete wall, Busch somehow managed to get to the finish line.

Busch left his mangled car on the track and was driven by the track’s ambulance to the infield medical care center where he was checked out and released.

“That was a wild ending, not sure at the time what was happening,” Busch said as he was walking back to the team’s transporter. “I just stayed on the gas to get to the finish line. Everything was going smoothly and it was looking like a sixth-place finish for the Furniture Row/Farm American car, but all of a sudden all heck broke loose.

“I saw the door of Biffle’s car come across my left front, and from there I went on to smack the wall. I kept on going and was able to nudge (Paul) Menard at the finish line for eighth.”

While Busch was happy to escape injuries in the final-lap melee, he was not overly happy with the final result. He knew he had a car that could challenge for the win, but while running in fourth place a pit road miscue (loose lug nut) on Lap 132 of 319 forced him to make an unscheduled pit stop under green. The incident sent him back to 25th place and one lap down.

“We definitely had a car that was capable of winning, but you can’t afford those kinds of mistakes,” said Busch, who had 64 green-flag passes. “However, we did battle back to notch our second straight top-10.”

Busch’s crew chief Todd Berrier echoed the same mixed feelings.

“Kurt had a good shot at winning today, but that one mistake on pit road was costly,” Berrier explained as he watched the No. 78 car being hauled to the transporter by a tow truck. “But we fought back and the credit goes to Kurt for another incredible driving performance. He can sure wheel a race car.”

Busch qualified sixth and ran up front for a good portion of the race. He was listed as fourth on Lap 50, fifth on Lap 100 and fourth on Lap 125.

“We keep on making progress,” Busch said. “I like everything I see about this Furniture Row team. We need to close out the season next week with another strong performance.”

The race winner was Kevin Harvick. Rounding out the top-10 in order were: Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Brad Keselowski, Greg Biffle, Busch, Paul Menard and Mark Martin.

The race had 11 lead changes among seven drivers, eight cautions for 38 laps and a red flag for nearly 15 minutes.

The next Sprint Cup Series race will be the season finale – Sunday, Nov. 18 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Los Angeles: Volkswagen Eos won't be replaced, Golf Cabriolet possible?

This week's Los Angeles Auto Show plays host to the coming out party for the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, which once again gives the German automaker a pair of four-seat convertibles clustered within striking distance of each other's price ranges. That won't be the case for long, however, as the recently refreshed Eos folding hardtop convertible won't get a successor.

The handwriting has been on the wall for the slow-selling model, which is priced above the new Beetle droptop, starting at $34,350 despite offering a similar powertrain to the Beetle Turbo, which rings up at $27,795 (base 2.5-liter Beetle Convertibles start at $24,495). Through October, Volkswagen has managed to sell just 5,529 Eos units, down 17.8 percent over 2011. This, despite a modest facelift and equipment updates for the 2012 model year. At the same time that the Eos was getting freshened, VW introduced the similarly sized and similar looking Golf Cabriolet for Europe, which despite folding hardtop construction, seemingly obviated the Eos' business case. The Cabriolet subsequently spawned GTI and R variants, giving the model further momentum and appeal.

Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's head of global design, did not tell Autoblog when the Eos will be phased out - VW has already released a 2013 model - but he did confirm that a replacement is not in the cards. However, Bischoff did express clear support for the idea of bringing the Golf Cabriolet to North America, as well as the GTI Convertible.

Ferrari vows it won’t be underdog in ’13

Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Interlagos 2012Ferrari is confident that it will be able to provide Fernando Alonso with a car that is capable of winning the Formula 1 championship next year after his near-miss in 2012.

Alonso led the points at various stages this year, but he was unable to overcome a performance deficit with the F2012 that left him playing catch-up to Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull.

Ferrari believes that the strong strategy and operational strengths of its outfit mean that a step forward with its car should deliver better championship prospects in 2013.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali expects that changes in the regulations next year – especially the more limited use of DRS in qualifying – will be a help too.

“We are trying to correct the points that were not the best in terms of our car,” he said.

“We need to improve the pace in qualifying, and the situation with DRS is something that should theoretically help.

“That is why I am confident that we should be in a different position at the start of the season next year.”

Domenicali believes there are reasons to feel encouraged by Ferrari’s performances at the end of the season.

“Don’t forget in the last four races we were the team that scored the most points,” he said.

“And in racing we were, in my view, the best in terms of managing pitstops, managing strategy, and being best in reliability.

“We didn’t have the fastest car at the beginning of the season, and maybe in the second half of the season we were not able to improve the car.

“This is something that we need to work harder on in order to improve it.

“Of course we have ideas as we know where we lacked. We also know we paid a big price in qualifying that hurt our performance in the race.”

M-Sport secures Qatar Ford WRC deal

Nasser Al-Attiyah, Cyprus IRCEx-Ford works team M-Sport has confirmed that it has secured Qatar backing to run a three-car squad in the 2013 World Rally Championship.

Qatar had been rumoured as the backer for the British-based team since Ford withdrew its support last month.

The new outfit will be known as the Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team, boss Malcolm Wilson revealed.

Nasser Al-Attiyah was key to the deal and will contest seven rallies in one of the cars.

“We are delighted to welcome such a prestigious partner as Qatar on board for 2013,” Wilson said. “The partnership with Nasser and the Qatari State will enable M-Sport to continue at the pinnacle of the sport and we are looking forward to working together in the future.

“Since the 2012 season came to a close, work has not stopped and the entire team is working around the clock to ensure we deliver a strong package for next year.”

Al-Attiyah, Qatar’s leading rally driver, a seven-time Middle East Rally champion and former Dakar Rally winner, drove a Citroen for his first top-class WRC campaign this season.

“We are looking forward to building on our strong relationship with M-Sport and working with them in 2013,” he said.

“I have a good knowledge of the car having driven the Fiesta S2000 to its debut win in 2010 and now looking to secure my eighth title in the Middle East with the Fiesta RRC.

“I am really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the Fiesta RS WRC and contesting as many WRC events as I can around my other motorsport commitments.”

A further announcement on the team’s driver line-up is expected later on Monday.

Vettel not focused on Alonso’s position

Sebastian Vettel, Red BullSebastian Vettel said his main focus after Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying was on figuring out where he had lost time in Q3 rather than on being four places clear of Formula 1 championship rival Fernando Alonso.

Vettel and Alonso will start fourth and eighth respectively. Those positions make Alonso’s task of overturning a 13-point deficit look tough.

But asked if the championship situation was the biggest thing on his mind, Vettel replied: “Not too much. I’ve just come out of qualifying knowing I could have done a little bit better. I’m keen to go back now and look at the data and see where I wasn’t quick enough.”

Vettel had been fastest in Q2 before making a mistake on his first Q3 lap and then missing pole by 0.302 seconds on his second. His team-mate Mark Webber took third behind the McLarens.

“Q3 was not 100 per cent perfect. Q2 was quite good for us,” said Vettel.

“The first run in Q3 was not good for me as I did a mistake going into Turn 4.

“The second run I was pretty happy with it but it wasn’t quick enough.”

But he remains confident he will be a factor at the front in the race.

“Obviously Mark was a bit quicker, but I think we are in good shape and we’ve competitive all weekend,” Vettel said.

Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa starts just one place behind Vettel in fifth, but the Red Bull insisted this did not bother him in the slightest.

“There are always going to be cars around you,” Vettel said. “It would be boring if it were just me on the grid. I think that’s pretty normal. We have mirrors on the car but we try not to use them too much.”

Brawn: Red Bull joy will be shortlived

Ross BrawnRed Bull’s delight at securing a hat-trick of Formula 1 world championship successes will be shortlived, reckons Mercedes boss Ross Brawn.

Sebastian Vettel helped Red Bull achieve a third successive drivers’ and constructors’ title double at the Brazilian Grand Prix when he bounced back from a first-lap crash to finish sixth.

While Red Bull’s chiefs are overjoyed at what they claim is their biggest achievement to date, Brawn suggests that there will be little time for the outfit to enjoy the spoils of its success.

“To win a race is a massive challenge, to win enough races to win a championship is pretty special, and to do it consecutive years is even more special,” said Brawn, who was part of the dominant Ferrari set-up at the start of the 21st century.

“But I know their pleasure is going to be shortlived in that they are already thinking about next year.

“In our case, it was fantastic to win it, but always there is the pressure of the following year – you want to win it, repeat it, and do it again.

“It is so intense in F1, you rarely sit back and feel job done, fantastic.

“There is a feeling of elation and achievement, but a fear of failure that is immediately there for the following year. You have that mixture of emotions.

“It is very special to win any championship and to win consecutive championships.

“It is a great achievement, and one they should be proud of.”

Red Bull is only the second outfit in F1 history, after Ferrari during the Michael Schumacher years (2000-04), to have completed a hat-trick of championship doubles with the same driver.

Los Angeles: 2013 Fiat 500e looks loud, runs quietly

2013 Fiat 500e

Somebody wanted it, so we all got it - the Fiat 500e, the electric city car packed with enough Earth-saving tech that CEO Sergio Marchionne quipped (admittedly, early last year) that each one built will cost Fiat $10,000. The good news is that it not only comes with tons of EV-only gadgets and features, it does a good job, to our eye, of flaunting its electric looks and it offers the kinds of personalization one would expect of a hatch in the 500 family.

The multi-contrast exterior is grouped into three color packages, including an e-Sport Package that pairs mean with green. The Interior can be had in either Nero or Steam, both coming with Electric Orange accents, and a seven-inch TFT screen with all kinds of electric-car-status details.

Juice comes courtesy of a 111-horsepower electric-drive motor with 147 pound-feet of torque, using a battery rated at 24 kWh. Range is estimated at "more than 80 miles" on the 15-inch Firehawk GT low-rolling resistance tires, but Fiat says stories of "greater than 100 miles" aren't uncommon. Bonito Dominates iRPS at Indianapolis

Bonito scored a flag-to-flag maiden iRPS victory at Indianapolis.

The third round of the iRacing.com Road Pro Series brought the virtual Williams-Toyota FW31s to the 13 turns of the Indianapolis Grand Prix circuit in its bid to source 25 new entrants for the 2013 iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series. Securing his first ever victory of the iRPS was Enzo Bonito, who put on a nearly flawless display to dominate the 73 lap online race in its entirety. Fortunately for the Italian, his start at the front of the 29 car grid meant he missed out on the opening lap carnage that marred proceedings at the virtual Brickyard.

After qualifying on pole with a time of 1:05.960, ineX Racing’s Bonito maintained his spot at the front even as behind him several cars found themselves embroiled in collisions within a few seconds of the green flag. After making a good getaway from the line, Radical Racing’s Paul Ilbrink approached the tail of Max Dell Orco, who was making his first appearance of the season. But as Ilbrink moved to the left of the Italian, Dell Orco’s car inexplicably veered in the same direction and set off into a spin. Ilbrink attempted to take avoiding action, which put him directly into the path of Ryan Terpstra, who had nowhere to go and collided with the Dutchman. A moment later, Dell Orco was finishing his spin at the same location as Terpstra and Ilbrink, which sent him back into the path of traffic in the middle of the circuit. Desperately trying to avoid Dell Orco’s wayward car, Vasily Zaitsev darted to the right and tagged Fabio do Carmo, who was able to recover and get his car to the finish, despite sustaining damage in the process.

Ilbrink vectors toward Terpstra amid the start-line chaos.

Meanwhile, as the field negotiated Turn One, Samuel Libeert’s contact with Davy Decorp’s left rear wheel sent the Frenchman into a 360 degree barrel-roll, before coming to a rest on the outside grass of the second corner. Miraculously, Decorps was able to get back to the pits, take repairs and rejoin the race to secure an eventual twelfth place finish. Libeert was not so fortunate, with the Radical’s sim-racer retiring early in twenty-fifth.

Descorps goes for a ride in Turn One, courtesy of Libeert.

Elsewhere, Aleksi Uusi-Jaakkola who had held a 100% winning record in the series to date, misjudged his braking into Turn Six and tagged Mogar DG Filho. The resulting suspension damage to Uusi-Jaakkola’s Williams-Toyota saw the Finn retire immediately, whilst Filho was able to limp home to the finish twenty-first with a severely damaged rear-wing, albeit four-laps down.

Uusi-Jaakkola blotted his formerly unblemished copybook — and fell from the championship lead — as the result of this coming-together with Filho.

As confusion reigned supreme behind him, Bonito was carving out his lead, with Emil Spindel and Richie Stanaway in tow after gaining immediate promotion following Filho’s incident. Within a handful of laps Bonito had established a lead of nearly two-seconds, the same margin Spindel carried over Stanaway. By the time the Italian headed to pit-lane for his first stop for fuel and tires on lap 26, the margin was up to four seconds.

Settling into a comfortable pace for his second stint, Bonito was able to improve his advantage over Spindel, although a penalty for cutting the track at Turn One did see the ineX racer drop his lead from seven to five seconds by the time he made his final pit-stop. For his final batch of 24 laps, Bonito’s pace proved to be unassailable, as he brought his Williams-Toyota FW31 home, unfettered with a nine-second gap in his pocket at the chequered flag. “I just let the car fly, I haven’t won this race, my team was on pole,” Bonito briefly and selflessly explained post-race.

“I just let the car fly, I haven’t won this race, my team was on pole.” — Enzo Bonito

The second place finish for Spindel, his best of the season so far, was enough to move the Scandinavian into the overall lead in the points standings, and earmark him as an iRPS championship contender. “I think there was not much I could do about Enzo with my pace this race,” the 2012 iWCGPS regular explained post race. “And looking at the rest of his teammates’ performances and pace, I think it’s clear they were in really good shape here. After the second pit stop, I saw I had lost two to three seconds during the pit-stops somehow, I sort of lost the motivation and there was no way I would catch those six to seven seconds so I let off.”

Although Stanaway was unable to match the unrelenting pace of Bonito and Spindel ahead of him, the New Zealander kept his hopes of a promotion to the iWCGPS alive with his first ever podium finish.

Whilst the top three finishers ‘cruised’ their way to the chequered flag, Teemu Iivonen, Dave Gelink and Simon Cattell had a 73 lap battle to the finish line. Starting from seventeenth on the grid, Iivonen made huge headway as a result of the opening lap confusion. Within just a few laps of the start, the Finn was up to sixth position, which soon became seventh on Lap 16, when he passed his ineX Racing teammate Gelink at Turn One. Then a mistake on pit-road by Englishman Cattell that cost him several seconds handed Iivonen fourth place. Cattell’s second pit-stop proved to be just as costly, as he exited in sixth position, behind Gelink, who had taken service several laps earlier.

Iivonen capped a great day for ineX Racing by leading Gelink and Cattell home in 4-5-6.

Locked together nose-to-tail for the final stint of the race, Iivonen led the trio of ineX Racing Williams-Toyota FW31s to the chequered flag, with barely a second separating the three of them. “To my surprise I managed to miss all the mayhem in Turn One and Turn Two and was sixth after the first lap when me and PJ [Stergios] drafted passed Sam,” Helsinki-based Iivonen shared this week. “After that I kept switching places with both Dave [Gelink] and Simon [Cattell] after they had various misfortunes with slowdowns and pit-stops. It was a motivation boost to have my team-mates right behind me and made me more focused on the race.  However I couldn’t close the gap to Richie [Stanaway] though since he had a really good pace in front.”

Once PJ Stergios had worked his way into seventh position at the start, the American barely put a foot wrong to maintain his position until the chequered flag. Assisted by a three-car battle between Jesper Pedersen, Pierre Urbizu and Jaoa Cardosa behind him, Stergios’ main challenge was the 2.6 mile circuit. As for the trio behind, after trading positions throughout the race, they finished eighth, ninth and tenth respectively, with Pedersen carrying a seven-second advantage to the line.

Pedersen bested Urbizu and Cardosa in a furious battle for eighth spot.

With Uusi-Jaakkola’s early exit at Indianapolis, the iRacing.com Road Pro Series standings underwent a considerable shake-up. Spindel’s first podium finish of the season sees him top the standings with 104 points to his name, with Indianapolis winner Bonito and Uusi-Jaakkola sharing second spot on 102. Filho’s early retirement sees him drop to fourth on 84 points, whilst Decorps’ tenacity sees the Frenchman move into fifth, just a single point behind.

Round Four of the iRPS heads to British shores for a visit to Silverstone’s Grand Prix circuit, a favourite amongst many of the drivers. With the championship leader-board so tightly packed, who will come out on top is anyone’s guess. You can find out live at GlacierTV.com this Saturday, and catch the analysis on inRacingNews soon after.

Maldonado says light turned red too late

Pastor Maldonado, WilliamsPastor Maldonado has blamed his failure to stop at the weighbridge during Q2, which earned him a reprimand and triggered an automatic 10-place grid penalty, on the signal light turning red too late.

Drivers can be called to the weighbridge at any time when they enter the pits during qualifying, with a light on the pit-wall going red to indicated that they must stop.

But Maldonado did not see the light, leading to the reprimand for failing “to proceed directly tot he FIA garage when signalled to do so.”

“It’s 50/50,” said Maldonado when asked by AUTOSPORT about the incident. “The light came on quite late.

“It was the first time that we run the 100km/h in the pitlane and when you are at 100km/h and the light is just 20 metres ahead of you, it’s too late.

“Maybe the light was completely red when I crossed it but at the same time, the entry of the pitlane is very narrow, you are very low in the car and there is a hill.

“When the hill finishes, there is the light, so it is a difficult situation.”

Despite lining up 16th after ending qualifying sixth, Maldonado is confident of being able to fight for points, particularly in wet conditions.

“The car is good, we are not very far away [in terms of pace],” he said.

“I’m very confident for tomorrow. Maybe it will be better than today, so we will see.

“I’ve been quite quick even at the start of qualifying when it was wet, I was immediately at the top so I am quite confident we can be strong.”

Defeated Alonso hails best season yet

Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, Interlagos 2012Fernando Alonso labelled his and Ferrari’s 2012 Formula 1 efforts as perfect despite losing out to Sebastian Vettel in the championship battle after a thrilling Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard went into the season finale 13 points behind Vettel and, during some stages of the race, Alonso was in a situation that would have allowed him to clinch his third title.

In the end, however, Alonso came in second and Vettel was sixth, a result that gave the Red Bull driver his third title by three points.

The Ferrari driver insisted his team had every reason to be extremely proud of its season, and said the title had not been lost in Brazil.

“The championship was not lost here,” said Alonso. “The championship was lost when [Romain] Grosjean flew over my head [at Spa] or when Vettel surprisingly only got a reprimand after qualifying in Japan.

“There’s been situations during the season that make you think of these three points, but that’s the sport. Even though I finished second in the points I have never had such respect and the affection from everybody in the paddock.

“This is the first time that I have got drivers, ex-drivers, teams, fans to say that we have done the best championship. We’ll be back as strong in 2013, because it would be harder to be stronger. I have a great feeling after 2012, by far the best year of my career.”

Alonso said the Brazilian race was a good example of what his season has been like, with him charging through the field to finish on the podium despite his car having not been as strong as its rivals’ in qualifying.

Alonso had started the race from seventh position.

The two-time champion reiterated his belief that it was a miracle he was still in the championship fight until the final laps.

“We tried to do the best as usual. We were starting seventh and we finished on the podium again, like we have been doing all season,” he said. “I think we didn’t have the quickest car, as it has been obvious in all races, and it was a miracle that we were fighting for the championship here.

“And it was a miracle until the final lap, because thanks to the team’s perfect work we have found ourselves in this position. And even though we lost the championship today, we have to be proud to have finished second.

“We are Formula 1 championship runners-up and not everybody can say that. And when you fight with all your heart and all your strength for so many months, without making a single mistake, neither the team or me, we have to be very proud.”

Another final round for Nobile in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (October 29) - still one week shy of his 21st birthday, Mountain View Racing Pro Stock driver Vincent Nobile has never pulled the lever on a slot machine or played a single hand of black jack, but that doesn't mean he hasn't gotten lucky in Las Vegas. For the second time this year, Nobile drove Nick Mitsos' NAPA/Mountain View Dodge to a Pro Stock final round at the famed Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nobile was runner-up to teammate Allen Johnson at the first NHRA Las Vegas event last April and the Mopar duo repeated that performance this weekend with the win once again going to Johnson. Nobile did his job on the starting line with a great reaction time but his 6.67 elapsed time fell to Johnson's 6.63.

"Obviously, it would have been great to win but overall we're very happy with the way our weekend went," said Nobile. "We thought we had a good chance to win the final but we broke a lash cap on the run and that hurt our performance a bit. We've been knocking on the door of another final round for the last few races and it was nice to finally get there again."

On his way to the final round, Nobile drove past reigning NHRA Full Throttle series champion Jason Line and also claimed a crucial victory against Erica Enders, his closest rival in the points battle. Enders is currently ranked third while Nobile is fourth. The strong showing allowed Nobile to move to within 14 points of Enders with one event remaining in the 2012 season.

"That's our goal right now," said Nobile. "We know that we can finish in third place and that would be awesome for our team. We finished fifth last season and obviously we'd like to improve on that. A couple of races ago I wasn't so sure we could do it but it's definitely within our grasp now.

"The final race of the season is also in Pomona, which is the home track for the Mitsos family and the whole Mountain View Tires team. Nothing would make me happier than to end the season with a victory there."

The season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California Finals will take place at Auto Club Pomona Raceway, Nov. 8-11.

Horner: Hamilton exit weakens McLaren

Sebastian Vettel races Lewis Hamilton at AustinMcLaren will be less of a championship threat after Lewis Hamilton’s exit, reckons Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Hamilton’s departure for Mercedes in 2013 means Jenson Button will be joined at McLaren by Sergio Perez, who has scored three podiums with Sauber but is yet to challenge at the front consistently or win a race.

Along with Ferrari, McLaren has been Red Bull’s main opposition through the Milton Keynes squad’s three-season Formula 1 title run.

But Horner believes the loss of Hamilton will significantly hamper McLaren.

“I think McLaren is a weaker team without Lewis,” said Horner. “I think McLaren would admit that.

“Lewis is an outstanding driver and in Lewis and Jenson they had a hugely strong driver line-up.”

He added that he would not discount McLaren even with its new driver pairing.

“McLaren have had a great car this year and who’s to say they won’t have an even better one next year,” Horner said.

But he also believes Mercedes is set to be a greater force with Hamilton onboard.

“Whichever team had taken Lewis, he would be an asset,” said Horner.

“I’m sure he will naturally add performance to Mercedes next year.”

Hulkenberg proud despite collision

Nico Hulkenburg collides with Lewis Hamilton at InterlagosNico Hulkenberg believes he can still be very proud of his Brazilian Grand Prix drive despite clashing with Lewis Hamilton and falling from first to fifth.

The German driver starred during the Interlagos event, overtaking the McLaren drivers to lead the race at various points.

But the Force India driver was given a penalty for crashing with Hamilton when trying to pass the Briton for the lead.

Hamilton was upset, but McLaren said after the race that Hulkenberg had apologised for their clash.

Hulkenberg, who will drive for Sauber next year, believes fifth was still a great leaving present for Force India.

“I’m not too disappointed,” he said. “Fifth place is still a good result.

“I think I’ve learned a lot in this race. My first kilometres leading a race, and fighting with the top guys, so it was pretty eventful and a hell of a race.

“I’m proud of what we’ve done and my drive. It’s not perfect but I’m still happy.”

He felt the collision with Hamilton was a simple racing accident.

“It was quite unfortunately obviously,” Hulkenberg said.

“We were challenging and we had Timo [Glock] and Heikki [Kovalainen] into Turn 1 as well.

“I think Lewis ran out of space with Heikki and was a bit irritated there. I obviously decided to make a move into Turn 1 and was on the damp side of the track and lost the rear a little bit. Unfortunately we collided.

“Looking at the incident I think it’s just one of those things in racing. I think he could’ve turned away a bit. But the way it worked wasn’t good for either of us.”

Team-mate Paul di Resta retired from the race when running in eighth position, the Scot crashing out two laps from the end.

“When we went back to the intermediates in the closing stages we were more competitive and I was up in eighth place,” he said.

“Unfortunately with a lap to go I aquaplaned in the final corner. It was a big hit with the wall, but I’m OK.”

Denny Hamlin (second) was the first Toyota Camry driver to the checkered flag in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Hamlin led the field twice for 46 laps (of 319).

Kyle Busch, who led the field four times for a race-high 237 circuits, crossed the finish line third.

Busch started from the pole after setting a track record qualifying speed (138.766 mph).

Camry driver Mark Martin (10th) also recorded a top-10 finish on the one-mile speedway.

Other Camry drivers in the field included Bobby Labonte (15th), Travis Kvapil (20th), Landon Cassill (25th), Joey Logano (27th), Clint Bowyer (28th), David Stremme (34th), Mike Bliss (41st) and Martin Truex Jr. (43rd).

Following the ninth of 10 races in the ‘Chase’ championship playoff, Camry drivers in the standings include Bowyer (fourth), Hamlin (fifth) and Truex (11th).

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 2nd

How was your race today? “The track is just so slick. We’re running on such hard tires. You can’t get a grip on it and it makes for exciting racing like we saw today. I’m proud of our FedEx Ground Toyota Camry team. We felt bad — wish we could have pulled off the sweep here. But, still one-two is pretty good.”

Can you describe today’s run? “Treacherous. The race track is extremely treacherous. You can’t — with these hard tires — you just can’t get a grip on the race track. I did a tire test with Goodyear here not too long ago on 2013 car. I think they got some ideas that’s going to make it a little bit better, but right now — holy cow, it’s a mess. What’s happening is everyone’s just sliding around and sliding into each other. Of course, it makes for excitement on TV, but obviously it also makes for championship implications as well.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 3rd

How was your race today? “Great day. Guys gave me an awesome car. Just gave it away at the end. Just didn’t pick the right lane. It’s my fault. So, it seems to be the way the year goes.”

Were there any issues on the final restart? “No. Kevin (Harvick) got out a little bit on me. Denny (Hamlin) got alongside of me. Just made me really loose trying to battle with the 11 (Denny Hamlin) so I couldn’t even drive forward at all. We just basically handed the race on a silver platter to the 29 (Kevin Harvick).”

Did the paper on your grill midway through the race cause any problems? “No. It didn’t cause a problem. We got it off there and temps stayed fine.”

How good was your race car? “Great car. M&M’s guys gave me an awesome piece. Unfortunately there, I gave the race away. I hate it for my guys. They work so hard and they dug hard this weekend. Obviously, having a car that’s the class of the field — you expect to win and you’re supposed to win. I guess I just didn’t know how to win it today.”

Do you think the official’s calls during the last few laps were correct? “I saw the yellow lights flickering before (Kevin) Harvick got to the start-finish line, so I believe they called it right. And, there on that last one, I mean there was oil and everything on the exit of turn four and we all about — well the front of us about crashed. So, I can’t imagine what was going on behind me. Evidently, there was more carnage going on back there. I’m not sure if they had time to react to all of that. But, granted you would expect that they would see all of that and see the oil slick. It wasn’t small by any means. It was three feet wide.”

MARK MARTIN, No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Finishing Position: 10th

How was your race? “Wow what a wild day. I’m fine but that was a pretty hard hit. We’ll take a top-10 finish. My team worked like heck throughout the weekend to get us this top-10. I couldn’t be more proud.”

BOBBY LABONTE, No. 47 Vektor Vodka Toyota Camry, JTG-Daugherty Racing Finishing Position: 15th

TRAVIS KVAPIL, No. 93 Burger King/Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry, BK Racing Finishing Position: 20th

LANDON CASSILL, No. 83 Burger King/Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry, BK Racing Finishing Position: 25th

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing Finishing Position: 27th

CLINT BOWYER, No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing Finishing Position: 28th

What happened between you and Jeff Gordon? “I mean the racing — it’s just a shame. The last person in the world you want to get into anything with is Jeff Gordon on the race track. I mean, you’re down there racing, the track’s extremely slick, we’re all on tires — I didn’t even need to pass him. That’s the thing. All I was doing is riding around biding my time. The only thing I had to do is keep the 5 car (Kasey Kahne) within reach, so for him to act like that — I mean, I barely touched him and then I feel him get into turn three and try to turn me and he missed and then next thing I know Brett’s (Griffin, spotter) telling me on the radio that he’s trying to — he’s waiting on me. It’s pretty embarrassing for a four-time champion — and what I consider one of the best this sport’s ever seen — to act like that is just completely ridiculous.”

What did NASCAR say when you met them after the race? “I don’t know. There’s nothing you can do to fix it now. It’s over with. You’ve got to go on to Homestead (-Miami Speedway). I’ve got to try to beat the 5 car (Kasey Kahne), but I mean that was my opportunity to try to get myself back in the championship hunt. When you’re disrupting a championship run like that, it’s too bad. They asked us not to do that in the driver’s meeting and there’s usually a lot of respect there. Like I said, it’s crazy — I didn’t even need to pass him. I was plenty content riding behind him and he slipped up down there, I get under him and here he comes back. I just barely touched him. I literally barely rubbed him and then all the sudden I feel him trying to retaliate and — I don’t know — missed or something and hit the wall and made himself look like a fool.”

Will you retaliate? “We just have to see.”

Did Jeff Gordon say anything to you in the meeting with NASCAR after the race? “Not really — it’s pretty soon to be talking to him (Jeff Gordon).”

Should NASCAR penalize Jeff Gordon? “You guys have been covering this sport a long time. Same circumstances happened — what was it, last year or year before and disrupted a championship and I don’t understand how that’s any different. Like I said, it’s over with and done and have to go to Homestead (-Miami Speedway) and do the best we can.”

MICHAEL WALTRIP, owner, No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing

What did you see happen between Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon? “I’ve never seen anything like what Jeff Gordon did to a guy racing for a championship. Cowardly, chicken sh** move by someone that has raced for championships before, and knows how important every position is. They barely brushed on the back straightaway and he waits — he purposely waits and tells everybody he’s waiting and wrecks our car and our hopes for racing for a championship. I’m beside myself. I can’t believe that he would get involved in the championship battle.”

What happened in the garage after the incident? “We’re just trying to keep everybody calm. It’s just a lot of emotion — a lot of guys that have way more time and effort invested than the act that Jeff Gordon took to take care of a problem. What a — I just don’t know what to say. I’m beside myself to think that that could happen.”

After Jimmie Johnson’s ‘issue’ did you believe your team was racing for a championship? “Yeah, we were in there still.”

Did you expect NASCAR to issue any penalties? “I don’t know what to expect. I can’t believe that someone would purposely wait and crash a guy racing for a championship. Everything else was just pushing and shoving and wasn’t any big deal. If you focus on what happened on the track, that’s where the story is — not someone trying to make something out of some guys pushing each other.”

Why did the No. 15 crew react the way they did after the incident? “It’s just boys venting, showing their frustration trying to express their feelings. The men and women that work on these cars have way more invested in what goes on than people realize and people appreciate and when a coward makes a move like that on the race track they just see all their hopes and dreams go up in flames, literally — they’re going to be frustrated.”

BRIAN PATTIE, crew chief, No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing

What caused the incident between Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon? “I don’t know. All I know is we were running top-five there and 24 (Jeff Gordon) kind of went up there. I don’t know. We must have got into him and he retaliated — so we’ll see what happens here. Post-race got a little exciting. Obviously, it doesn’t look like there’s too many Christmas cards going back and forth from the 15 (Clint Bowyer) and the 24.”

How do you expect NASCAR to react? “Well, if they’re consistent, they’ll park him. They parked the 18 truck (Kyle Busch) at (Texas) — when they retaliated. We’ll see what happens. I like to be consistent. I try to be as fair as I can, so hopefully they are too.”

What happened to send you to the garage? “Just something in the engine. It’s a shame. We had an awesome race car this weekend. I felt like we had a shot at challenging for a win, but it wasn’t meant to be. I can’t say enough about TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and what they’ve been able to do for us this year — their engines have been incredible. This is the first problem we’ve had all year long and they’ve done an awesome job at giving us really good horsepower. Last year, we struggled on the engine side of things as far as power goes and this year they’ve done such a great job. It’s a shame it always happens when you have a really good race car, but at the end of the day they’ve done awesome. And, this is just a small little thing and I’m sure it’s a parts failure or something like that.”

When did you realize you had an ‘issue’? “Well, the engine started laying down on like the second lap and something broke in the top end and just started eating itself up, so we’re done for the day. It’s just a shame. We’ve had such a good race car all weekend long and really felt like we were going to have a shot at maybe challenging for the win today. It wasn’t meant to be. The NAPA Toyota was really good all weekend. The guys did a great job. I also have got to say all the guys at TRD (Toyota Racing Development) — they’ve done such an incredible job all year long with our engine program. This is the first problem we’ve had and we’ve had great horsepower all year long. Really struggled with that last year and they really stepped it up, so I want to thank all those guys. Just one of those deals — probably a parts failure or something.”

Kevin Harvick Wins in Wild Finish at Phoenix International Raceway

(PHOENIX, Ariz.) -  What might have been a dominating victory by Kyle Busch in the AdvoCare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race turned into a wild finish when Kevin Harvick raced his no. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet to the win in the closing 15 laps on the strength of a fierce restart with eight laps to go and another on a green-white-checkered finish.

The race was thrown into overtime when a caution period occurred a split second before the white flag was to wave.  Instead of freezing the field and ending the race with Harvick as the winner in the regulation 312 laps, a red flag was displayed for 14 minutes and 58 seconds to clean a wreck that included four cars.  It also extended the event to 319 laps.

Slow-running Jeff Gordon, who was being black-flagged for running less than the required minimum speed, was driving in the race groove in turn four and ended up at the focal point of the controversial crash.  Seventh-running Clint Bowyer, the third place championship runner still clinging to faint title hopes, Joey Logano, and Aric Almirola crashed with Gordon split seconds before new leader Harvick reached the start-finish line.  That angered Bowyer’s crew which took after Gordon’s team in a heated skirmish in the garage.

It also threw the sellout Phoenix International Raceway crowd into a frenzy.  Emotions grew wilder moments later when multiple cars wrecked as they took the checkered flag that came seven laps after the scheduled 312 circuits.

With the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship in its closing stages, all eyes at the day’s beginning were on upstart Brad Keselowski who started seven points behind five-time champion Jimmie Johnson in the season’s penultimate race.  When Johnson cut his right front tire on lap 235 his Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet suffered suspension damage when it hit the turn 1 wall.  He finished 32nd, 38 laps down, and fell 20 points behind Keselowski in the championship hunt.  One race remains next week, and Keselowski needs only to finish 15th, regardless of Johnson’s performance, to clinch his first title.

Most of the sunny afternoon was spent focusing on the taillights of Busch, who led by far the most laps with 237.  “It (his pole-sitting no. 18 M&M’s Toyota) was an awesome piece, and I gave the race away,” he said forlornly.  “I guess I didn’t know how to win it.”

Keselowski barely made it past the Gordon-Bowyer wreck on his way to a sixth place finish, saying, “I thought I was going to wreck, so I just hoped I could bounce off the walls and make it back to the start-finish line.”  While the new points leader was bitterly angry over what he considered late-race retaliation by some drivers, he joked about the good luck he received when Johnson hit the wall: “I’m sure maybe five years from now, if I end up winning this thing (the title), there will be somebody saying ‘Remember Phoenix, when such-and-such laid down thumbtacks and blew out Jimmie’s tire?’”

Race winner Harvick, who claimed his first checkered flag this season and third in 20 races at PIR, also offered a light touch when commenting on the fisticuffs between the Bowyer and Gordon teams: “Fights?  This sport was made on fights.  We ought to have more fights.”

The next exciting race weekend at PIR will take place in the second week of the 2013 NASCAR season when the Subway Fresh 500 headlines the March 1-3 weekend.
