Da Costa triumphs in wet thriller

Antonio Felix da CostaAntonio Felix da Costa made it back-to-back victories in Formula Renault 3.5 by winning a rain-affected opening race of the weekend at Paul Ricard.

The Red Bull-backed driver recovered from a poor start from third on the grid to stay out of trouble and pick his way back through the field, eventually coming out on top in a head-to-head scrap for the win with wet weather specialist Nick Yelloly.

Da Costa and pole sitter Yelloly both made poor starts – the former when his anti-stall kicked in when he selected second gear, the latter due to too much wheelspin – leaving title rivals Robin Frijns and Jules Bianchi to contest the first corner.

But as the top two fought in the tricky first sector, they were both passed by a charging Andre Negrao, who shot into an early lead.

As Frijns dropped back, Bianchi hunted down Negrao, taking the lead when the Brazilian faltered at the chicane on the Mistral straight on lap eight.

However, both leaders went off a lap later just after Signes, falling behind the clutch of chasing cars and handing the lead to Yelloly.

Da Costa briefly took the lead after Yelloly slowed having cut the chicane on lap 11, but the Briton seized the place back at Turn 1. However, when the Portuguese driver went through for a second time two laps later, he would not be headed again.

Yelloly took a comfortable second place, while Daniil Move charged through the chaos behind to take third, fending off a last corner attack from Bianchi – who was recovering from a second off – in sight of the chequered flag.

Championship leader Frijns, who spent his entire race trying to defend against faster cars, eventually came home seventh.

The other contender in the championship, Sam Bird, had a quiet race from 16th on the grid. However, he did manage to salvage a point, stealing 10th place from Mikhail Aleshin on the final lap.

Hamilton joins Mercedes from 2013

Lewis Hamilton Mercedes has confirmed Lewis Hamilton has signed a three-year deal to drive for the German squad from next year.

The Briton, whose move was expected after McLaren announced Sergio Perez for 2013 earlier on Friday morning, will drive alongside Nico Rosberg, replacing seven-time champion Michael Schumacher at the team.

Mercedes did not specify what Schumacher’s plans were.

Hamilton, who has been driving for McLaren since he made his debut in Formula 1 in 2007, said he needed a “fresh challenge”.

“It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the Mercedes Formula 1 team,” said Hamilton.

“Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share.

“Together, we can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning the world championships.”

Hamilton’s career has been supported by Mercedes and McLaren for many years, having driven with Mercedes-Benz engines in the Formula 3 Euro Series and during his whole F1 career at the Woking team.

“I am delighted to welcome Lewis Hamilton to our team,” said Mercedes boss Ross Brawn. “The arrival of a driver of Lewis’ calibre is a testament to the standing of Mercedes-Benz in Formula 1 and I am proud that Lewis shares our vision and ambition for the success of the Silver Arrows.

“I believe that the combination of Lewis and Nico will be the most dynamic and exciting pairing on the grid next year, and I am looking forward to what we can achieve together.”

Rosberg and Hamilton were team-mates in 2000 at TeamMBM.com in Formula A karting.

After the news was announced, Rosberg tweeted: “Very cool that Lewis will be my new team-mate! Going to be another great challenge.”

AUTOSPORT says…

By AUTOSPORT F1 editor Edd Straw

Nico Rosberg wins in ChinaWith the signing of Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes now has everything… except excuses. In almost three full seasons since the marque returned to F1 as a works team having acquired the Brawn squad, it has produced one victory among a lot of underachievement.

In an interview with AUTOSPORT just before the launch of its 2012 car, team principal Ross Brawn stated that “third has got to be the minimum. Anything less would be a failure.” So by its own terms of reference, Mercedes has failed this year.

Realistically, Hamilton has to write off winning the title next year, but if the potential of the Brackley team can be fully realised and Mercedes produces the kind of V6 turbocharged engine straight out of the box that it’s capable of, Hamilton could be perfectly placed for 2014.

But Hamilton has still rolled the dice on a perennially underachieving team delivering. Like all good gambles, if it pays off, he wins big. ‘If’ being the operative word.

Bloomberg: Transit Should Be Free, and Drivers Should Pay More

Mayor Bloomberg talks transit in his 2007 PlaNYC speech. Photo: Sarah Goodyear

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg rode the Staten Island Ferry, which has the distinction of being one of the few forms of public transportation in New York that is free to its users. At the press conference to announce the world’s largest ferris wheel (plus additional parking!) near the ferry terminal in St. George, the mayor was asked for his thoughts on transportation. He replied:

If you were gonna design, keep in mind, the perfect public transportation system, you would have it be free and you would charge people to use cars, because you want the incentive to get them to do that.

This short quote provides a window into the philosophy that has guided the Bloomberg administration’s transportation policy. It’s about more than congestion pricing. Free transit is not just the dream of progressive activists, it’s also a policy goal of the billionaire mayor.

Will any among the current crop of candidates to succeed him best Bloomberg on this front? How many of them think that, in an ideal world, transit should be free? How many of them would actually work to make that happen? If the next administration doesn’t step up for transit, other cities will continue to leave us in the dust.

Sato joins OAK LMP1 line-up

Takuma SatoIndyCar driver Takumo Sato will make his sportscar debut in OAK Racing’s new LMP1 contender at the Fuji World Endurance Championship round.

The Honda-contracted Japanese driver will drive the OAK-Pescarolo LMP1, powered by the Honda Performance Development V8 engine, with team regulars Bertrand Baguette and Dominik Kraihamer at Fuji on October 14 and then the WEC finale at China’s Shanghai circuit at the end of the month.

The new HPD-engined version of the 2012 OAK P1 was given a shakedown by Sato at Magny-Cours on Thursday.

Sato, who raced for Rahal Letterman Lanigan in the IndyCar Series in 2012, is due to undertake a full day of testing with the car on Friday.

“Working with OAK Racing is an opportunity that has really excited and motivated me,” said Sato, who raced for Jordan, BAR and Super Aguri in Formula 1 between 2002 and ’08.

“I’ve spent my entire career racing single-seaters and obviously the LMP1 feels different to those, but my initial impressions are very good and I am thrilled by this whole new experience.”

OAK team manager Sebastien Philippe said: “I am delighted that Taku will be joining us for the Asian races. We first met in 2000 when we were both Formula 3 drivers for Honda, so I have first-hand experience of just how quick and talented he is. I have no doubts that he can make a significant contribution to the team and our LMP1 programme.”

The French OAK team is returning to the LMP1 division after missing three WEC races. Its solo P1 entry formerly ran with the Engine Developments Judd V8.

Green ‘curious’ about Valencia work

Jamie GreenJamie Green hopes that resurfacing work at Valencia will make qualifying for this weekend’s DTM race far less of a lottery than in the past.

Previously, the amount of grip available on the track was altered significantly by smaller changes in temperature than most other circuits.

During qualifying last year a number of drivers were caught out when the final two minutes of Q2 – usually the fastest part of the session – proved significantly slower due to a slight shift in the amount of cloud cover over the circuit.

Green, who failed to make Q3 at the Spanish track last year, is hopeful that a more conventional session will follow as a result of the work.

“In the past, the surface at Valencia was extremely temperature dependent, which made it important to time your lap so that you were out on track when it was at its fastest,” he said.

“I’m curious to see how the new Tarmac behaves and whether the scenario has since changed.”

Schnitzer Motorsport boss Charly Lamm’s lead driver Bruno Spengler is just 11 points behind championship leader Gary Paffett, with 50 still available from the final two races.

Despite his team having tested extensively at Valencia earlier in 2012, he believes that the new surface will leave Spengler his team-mate Dirk Werner largely starting from scratch this weekend.

“We have experience of Valencia through testing the BMW M3 DTM there,” Lamm said.

“However, the surface of the track has been completely relayed since then, meaning we will have a lot to learn there again.”

Mike Conway signs with AJ Foyt Racing for the 2012 Indy Car season

AJ Foyt Racing
Mike Conway
London, UK - Tuesday 20th December 2011

MG5D7193_low res.jpgLong Beach Grand Prix winner Mike Conway has signed with AJ Foyt Racing to drive the No. 14 ABC Supply Honda in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series.

Conway brings strength on the road courses to the AJ Foyt Racing team. In 2011, he qualified in the top-10 six times on the road and street circuits, which is also where his four top-10 finishes came.

"With the Series having twice as many road courses as ovals, we looked for a driver who is fast on those tracks and Mike has certainly proved himself in that area," said A.J. Foyt. "I'm looking forward to working with him," adding with a chuckle, "I may even be able to give him a little advice when it comes to the ovals!"

"First of all I'd like to thank 2MB Sports Management and AJ Foyt Racing for making this deal come together. I can't wait to start work with the AJ Foyt Racing team and to drive the No. 14 ABC Supply Car. It's going to be an exciting season with the new cars and multiple engine manufacturers. Hopefully we can hit the ground running with off season developments and be quick out the box. I'm counting the days until the first test and the start of the season;" commented Mike Conway.

Conway made his first start in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2009 driving for Dreyer-Reinbold. Towards mid-season he began capitalising on his brilliant potential with several top-10 finishes before scoring his first podium -a third place finish at California's challenging Infineon Raceway.

In 2010, he was in position to post his fourth top-10 finish in six starts but on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500, he collided with a suddenly slowing Ryan Hunter-Reay, launching Conway into the catchfence resulting in season-ending injuries to his leg and back.

Signing with Andretti Autosport in 2011, Conway dispelled all doubts about his return to the cockpit with a strong fourth place qualifying run in the season opener in St. Petersburg and an incredible drive in the Long Beach Grand Prix. In that race, he qualified third but dropped to 21st after a problem on the first pit stop. Conway fought his way back to lead the final 14 laps after executing a couple of textbook passes on frontrunners Ryan Briscoe and Dario Franchitti, who finished second and third.

The British Racing Drivers Club recently awarded the Innes Ireland Award to Conway in recognition of his inspiring comeback from his 2010 Indy 500 accident. The award is given to the driver who best displayed the qualities of courage and sportsmanship epitomised by the late Innes Ireland; a British Formula 1 driver who was badly injured in the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix. He recovered to win three Grands Prix the same season including the U.S. Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.

En route to Conway's burgeoning IndyCar career, the 28-year-old Briton won several championships; triumphing in British Karting, the 2004 Formula Renault UK Series as well as the British F3 International Series in 2006. Conway captured the Macau Grand Prix in 2006 becoming the first British driver to do so since Darren Manning won it in 1999.

In 2007 and 2008, Conway raced in the very competitive GP2 Series (previously named Formula 3000); the feeder series to Formula 1. Conway, who won a sprint race in the streets of Monaco in 2008, also served as a test driver for the Honda Formula 1 team during that time.

"We all have big expectations for the upcoming season, and Mike shares our passion for getting the team back in victory lane," Larry Foyt said. "There is no doubt he has a ton of talent and, when combined with A.J. Foyt's experience, I think we can accomplish great things together."

Foyt's ABC Supply team will take delivery of its 2012 Dallara this week and expects to start testing in early February.

Sebring bullish about WEC date loss

Allan McNish, Audi, Sebring 2012Sebring is confident that World Endurance Championship teams will still contest its 2013 12-hour race despite the event being left off the WEC calendar.

The FIA has announced that Austin will replace Sebring as the WEC’s American date. Sebring had kicked off the inaugural WEC calendar this season.

The move comes a year before the major shake-up of American sportscar racing that will ensue when the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am merge. Sebring remains an ALMS round.

A Sebring statement highlighted that its 12 Hours next March takes place a full month before the WEC opener at Silverstone, and said the schedule had been designed so that WEC squads could still compete in Florida.

Sebring president and general manager Tres Stephenson was bullish about his event’s chances of attracting WEC squads.

“We are very encouraged about 2013,” he said. “We have already received inquiries from WEC teams who wish to compete in next year’s Sebring endurance classic.”

WEC chief Gerard Neveu said Sebring was dropped so that all the WEC’s non-European rounds took place after the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2013, and because of fears a joint WEC/ALMS entry would be impossible to accommodate.

“Imagine if we had 32 or 34 WEC cars and 35 in the ALMS,” Neveu said. “It would be difficult to tell people that there was not room for everyone.”

2013 Maserati GranTurismo MC Convertible: Dropping the Needle on Its Latest MC [2012 Paris Auto Show]

2013 Maserati GranCabrio MC convertible (Euro-spec)

Inspired by the success of the $200,000-plus GranTurismo MC Stradale (itself inspired by the Trofeo GranTurismo MC spec race car), Maserati designed this droptop GranTurismo MC to satiate Maser fans looking for higher levels of performance and more aggressive styling in an open-top car. Motivation for the essentially hand-assembled car will come from Maserati’s Ferrari-assembled 4.7-liter, 454-hp V-8 mated to a six-speed auto. Featuring pistons made of hardened aluminum and a high-strength steel crankshaft, the unit is good for 384 lb-ft of torque at 4750 rpm. Mated to the ZF-supplied MC Auto Shift transmission, the combo is said to propel the GranTurismo MC (with the softtop closed) to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, and on to a claimed terminal velocity of 180 mph. The season will start in Australia on March 17 and conclude in Brazil on November 24.

The only revisions to the draft calendar distributed to teams in Singapore is that the Korean and Japanese Grands Prix have been switched around, Germany has been moved forward a week to July 14 and the Belgian Grand Prix has been moved to August 25.

The New Jersey race that is scheduled to take place on June 16 remains provisional, subject to a contract being sorted out between organisers and Bernie Ecclestone.

The FIA also announced that it hoped to sign off a new Concorde Agreement with Bernie Ecclestone and the teams next month.

A statement issued by the governing body said: “The FIA President confirmed that positive and constructive discussions continue with regard to the new Concorde Agreement and it is anticipated a contract will be signed by the end of October.”

Widow of Manhattan Pedestrian Rubin Baum Not Likely to See Justice Done

Another innocent bystander was killed by an outlaw motorist in Manhattan last weekend, and indications are that another perpetrator will go unpunished by police and prosecutors.

Rubin and Denise Baum. Photo via Daily News

On Saturday night at around 10:30 p.m., Rubin and Denise Baum were attempting to hail a cab at Park Avenue and E. 59th Street when, according to reports, the driver of a Mazda sedan, eastbound on 59th, ran a red light and struck a minivan, which was headed north on Park. The Mazda spun into the Baums. Rubin pushed Denise out of the car’s direct path, though she was struck and thrown into a parked vehicle. Rubin was pinned underneath the car.

Baum, an 80-year-old decorated war veteran whose father was also killed at the hands of a Manhattan motorist, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Whether it was the driver of the Mazda or the minivan, given the direction each vehicle was traveling, one of the two had to have run the light — barring a traffic signal malfunction, which has not been cited as a possible cause. Since the collision could not be avoided, and the vehicles collided with sufficient force to send one of them spinning into the Baums, it is highly likely that at least one driver was speeding as well. Yet just a few hours after the crash police told DNAinfo that “no criminality was suspected,” NYPD-speak for “case closed.”

“I want to know who did this,” Denise Baum told the Daily News. “Was he drunk? Was he on drugs?”

If either driver had been found under the influence, criminal charges would probably — but not certainly — have been issued. Otherwise, these things happen.

NYPD bluntly refuses to properly investigate traffic crashes that result in injury and death. A package of City Council bills and resolutions intended to suggest that NYPD fulfill its obligations under the law does not have the support of council speaker and mayoral aspirant Christine Quinn, who speaks unequivocally on maintaining police budget levels but has no opinion on whether NYPD should protect New Yorkers from random street killings.

Thanks to the arbitrary “rule of two,” motorists who run people over are almost always immune from prosecution as long they didn’t mean to kill you, which in New York State means they weren’t drunk at the time. The juris doctor’s answer to the tooth fairy, the rule of two exists only in the minds of prosecutors who believe in it, but it’s a tradition that shows few signs of abating.

Rubin Baum was the 27th Manhattan pedestrian or cyclist known killed by a motorist in 2012. To date, no motorists are known to have been charged by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance for killing a pedestrian or cyclist this year. An e-mail to Vance’s office about this crash was not immediately returned.

This fatal crash occurred on the border of the 18th and 19th Precincts. To voice your concerns about neighborhood traffic safety directly to the commanding officer of either precinct, go to the next precinct community council meeting. Community council information is available on each precinct’s web page.

The City Council district where Rubin Baum was killed is represented by Dan Garodnick. To encourage Garodnick to take action to improve street safety in his district and citywide, contact him at 212-788-7393, garodnick@council.nyc.ny.us or @DanGarodnick.
