Glock has high hopes for Marussia

Timo Glock Marussia 2012 Brazilian GP

Timo Glock believes that Marussia’s McLaren windtunnel programme can give the team a huge amount of optimism for the 2013 season.

Delays meant that the British team was unable to test its MR01 properly before the start of the season, and resulted in Glock qualifying 2.6 seconds behind Heikki Kovalainen’s Caterham at the Australian Grand Prix in March.

But since signing a technical agreement with McLaren in 2011 that includes use of the Woking team’s windtunnel, and revising its technical structure to include consultancy from Pat Symonds, Marussia has consistently closed the gap on its chief rival.

Glock believes that the gains made during the past season mean a promising future for John Booth’s squad, which will use KERS for the first time in 2013.

“I think the windtunnel work paid off since we went to McLaren, and that looks very positive for the future,” he said.

“It was a difficult year in 2012 with a very difficult start; going to Australia with no testing.

“But I think since then we’ve improved the car quite a lot.

“I didn’t think that we would close the gap again because we were 1.5s off Caterham [on race pace] and then closed the gap very quickly over the second half of the season, which is great.”

Glock said that the highlight of his year was his 12th placed finish at the Singapore Grand Prix, the best result for the team that began life as Virgin in 2010.

His former team-mate Charles Pic later equalled that finish in Brazil.

“We absolutely got it right at that race and took some risks,” Glock, a three-time F1 podium finisher, said.

“Korea was also good as I could really challenge the Caterhams, and Austin was good as well because we had a very good qualifying.

“It was a shame that in the race we dropped behind the Caterhams again because the KERS factor was just too big. But that was a very strong race for myself.”

Glock will be partnered by British driver Max Chilton in 2013, the GP2 graduate having signed to replace Caterham-bound Pic in early December.

Triple Eight and Fortec add GT teams

888OptimumTop British Touring Car team Triple Eight and junior single-seater powerhouse Fortec Motorsport will both expand into GT racing next season.

Ian Harrison’s Triple Eight squad will partner with established GT outfit Optimum Motorsport to form a new team for British GT.

888Optimum, as the team will be known, will run two BMW Z4 GT3s from Triple Eight’s base in Greatworth, Northamptonshire.

Triple Eight boss Ian Harrison said: “This is the kind of project we have been trying to get started for a few years now, and its satisfying to be finally going into it at this high level.

“Obviously Triple Eight is new to GT racing and we do not underestimate the steep learning curve that stands in front of us. But with Optimum’s experience, we have an opportunity to develop the team quickly from the start.”

Joe Osborne, who won two races in British GT in 2012 in a Trackspeed Porsche, will share the team’s first entry with Optimum owner and Ginetta racer Lee Mowle.

Osborne’s 2012 co-driver Steve Tandy will share the second car with Dan Brown, a race winner in British GT in 2009 and ’10.

Mowle, who raced a Ginetta G55 in British GT in 2012, said: “Teaming up with Triple Eight will give me the opportunity to focus on racing in British GT – a huge passion of mine.

“I’m looking forward to working with Ian Harrison and Matt Kelly, and the 888Optimum team will be a great addition to British GT. Having tested the BMW Z4 GT3 in Germany, it was clearly the car for me.”

Former BTCC racer Kelly will head up the commercial side of the operation. He said the team would look to expand into other European GT series in the future.

“The BMW Z4 GT3 was chosen after testing other cars eligible for this class of racing, and was the clear winner,” he said.

“888Optimum is a hugely exciting project and 2013 should be an outstanding year in British GT.”

Richard Dutton’s Fortec squad will run two Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s in the Blancpain Endurance Series and British GT in 2013.

No drivers have yet been signed but the team, which has close links to Mercedes through its Formula 3 programme, will be run by Trevor Foster, who last worked with Fortec in F3 in 1995 before going to the Jordan Formula 1 team.

Team boss Richard Dutton said: “It came about when one of my old single-seater drivers said I should do GT racing, because then he could have stayed at the team!

“The idea has built from there. Mercedes asked if we wanted to do something with the GT project. It’s a customer deal, but we have a very long relationship with Merc.”

Davidson secures Daytona 24 seat

Anthony Davidson Peugeot 2011 ILMCToyota driver Anthony Davidson will make his comeback from the back-breaking injuries he sustained in the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours in the Daytona 24 Hours next month.

The Briton, who fractured two vertebrae in the aerial crash at Mulsanne Corner at the wheel of the second Toyota TS030 HYBRID, will race for the new 8Star Motorsports squad.

Davidson will share the team’s Corvette-bodied Coyote-Chevrolet Daytona Prototype with fellow Peugeot refugees Stephane Sarrazin, Nicolas Minassian and Pedro Lamy, and team owner Enzo Potolicchio.

Davidson said: “It will be a great way to start the year. The Daytona 24 Hours is a race I’ve always wanted to do and the chance to do it with Stephane, who I’ll be teamed with at Toyota again next year, was too good to turn down.”

Former Starworks driver Potolicchio, who has set up his own team race in Grand-Am and the LMP2 division of the FIA World Endurance Championship, said: “Anthony is one of the best prototype drivers in the world and he brings even more experience and speed to the 8Star Motorsports new Corvette DP car.”

Davidson will get his first laps in the Coyote at the official Daytona test, which starts on January 4-6. It will be his first time back in a racing car since the Le Mans accident.

Potolicchio hinted that Davidson could contest more Grand-Am races with 8Star over the course of the season. He is expecting to share his Corvette with a number of his Daytona drivers over the season.

Teased: Alfa Romeo teases 4C, confirms 2013 arrival

Any time you open up your promotion for a new vehicle with the claim of a "car to end all cars," you better have the goods to back it up. If any automaker has said goods, it is Alfa Romeo. The brand behind the stunning 8C has promised a new car to debut in 2013. We all know that vehicle will be the 4C (a name which has been trademarked in America), which has been running ahead of schedule in development. With this teaser shot, it seems that a production version should be imminent. The report from Motor Authority, suspects that could be as early as the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

We've been enamored with the 4C ever since we saw the first concept for it at Geneva in 2011. Since then, we've heard word of convertible variants and various facts and figures, such as a sub-2000-pound curb weight, and a 1.8-liter mill. The low weight, combined with the claimed 200 horsepower could put the 4C's zero to 60 times below four seconds.

As promising as this teaser is, our hopes of Alfa's tearing up American roads have been repeatedly dashed by reports from the Italian brand. Time and again, Alfa's supposed entry into the US has been delayed. Let us hope that this new teaser serves as warning that Alfa Romeo's invasion is imminent.

Priaulx certain of stronger 2013

Andy Priaulx Andy Priaulx is certain that the lessons learnt in his maiden DTM campaign this year can make him a much stronger competitor next year.

Priaulx scored points in four of the 10 races in 2012 on his way to 13th in the championship.

But the RBM BMW driver often found himself on the receiving end of opening-lap trouble after qualifying in mid-pack.

The three-time World Touring Car champion is looking forward to his second year and is determined to strengthen his challenge for honours.

“It was great driving in a completely different series and I can’t wait to go into year two, as I know I’ll be able to make use of all that I learnt this year in my M3,” he said.

“I was always aware that the DTM would have its challenges. I had some highs, including being the first BMW driver to score points this year at the opening round. And I had some lows as well; the non-finishes.

“However, that’s 2012 and now the focus is on 2013. The preparation is well underway.”

Priaulx’s M3 will be part of an expanded eight-car line-up as Ernest Knoors’ MTEK squad joins RBM, Schnitzer and RMG.

Alonso flawless in 2012 – Webber

Mark Webber Fernando Alonso F1 2012Mark Webber believes Fernando Alonso produced a flawless season in 2012 as he tried to fend off the Australian’s Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel for the Formula 1 world championship.

Despite Ferrari starting the season off the pace, Alonso managed to pull out a 40-point lead over Webber, then his nearest rival, by the summer break.

But when Red Bull rediscovered its dominant form in the final run-in, Vettel was able to edge ahead and eventually clinch the title by three points.

Asked if he felt pity for Alonso, Webber replied: “I don’t think he put a wheel wrong all year. That’s the reason I think he’s so disappointed. He felt he probably did everything he could.

“Was it his best season ever in terms of what he did? It could well be. He couldn’t have done much more.”

Webber noted that his defeat of Alonso in the British Grand Prix had proved crucial given Vettel’s slender eventual winning margin.

“To still miss out by just three points – it was lucky I passed him at Silverstone…” said Webber.

Vettel said he would prefer not to pass judgement on his adversary’s performance.

“I respect him as a driver for the fact he is fighting and he is one of the best drivers we have in F1, but you look after yourself,” said the champion.

“We were fighting quite a lot as well. I don’t want to put a perspective on who was fighting more or harder, that’s not the point.

“It’s a long season, there’s a lot of races and in the end the guy who wins the most points wins the championship.

“Of course I am very happy it was us and not him.”

Audi: Ekstrom always certain to stay

Mattias EkstromTwo-time DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom was never set to leave Audi, according to marque motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich.

Ekstrom, who finished sixth in this year’s DTM with the Abt team, had been linked to moves to both DTM newcomer BMW and Mercedes, but the Swede was confirmed as part of Audi’s line-up for 2013 on Wednesday.

Fellow Abt driver Timo Scheider, who has also won two DTM titles for Audi, was also confirmed after speculation that he could leave.

Ullrich said: “Mathias and Timo will be with us next year. There has been a lot of speculation about that, but they both had long-term contracts, so the door was never open for discussion.”

Spaniard Miguel Molina, who raced for the Phoenix squad this season, has parted company with Audi.

Ullrich said: “Miguel will leave the team. I am sure there will be other opportunities for him to make a career in motorsport and we give him whatever help we can.”

Rachel Frey will also not race in the DTM but is expected to be given a programme racing an Audi R8 LMS ultra GT3 car.

One place in Audi’s eight-car DTM line-up, which has been bolstered for 2013 by the arrival of Jamie Green, is still up for grabs.

Sportscar driver James Rossiter and Formula Renault 3.5 driver Nico Muller are understood to be in the frame after testing for Audi earlier this winter.

AUTOSPORT says
Jamie O’Leary, DTM correspondent

Mattias Ekstrom looked finished at times this year. The smiles looked ever more forced and the quips became increasingly sarcastic, albeit with that typical Scandinavian humour of his.

OK, so it never got to Spielberg 2011 levels, where he turned off his car’s engine during his first pitstop, climbed out and later declared: “I’m saving the environment. What’s the point in wasting fuel over 16th place?” But the frustration was still evident.

Mattias Ekstrom, Abt Audi, Zandvoort DTM 2012Throw into the equation that both BMW and Mercedes had made firm offers to the two-time champion for 2013, and the fact that his Abt Sportsline A5 was “only a 10 out of 10″ at one of the year’s 10 races, and you could have been forgiven for thinking that an exit was the only option, despite a year remaining on his Audi contract.

But, like his team-mate Timo Scheider – another man to endure a rubbish season – he could see the bigger picture. Yes Audi seemed to struggle more often than Mercedes or BMW for the most part of 2012, but in actual fact these apparent struggles looked bigger than they actually were.

There were weekends when the A5 was the strongest package. Edoardo Mortara’s Spielberg and Zandvoort wins were proof of that, while only an inspired drive from Augusto Farfus at Valencia denied the Ingolstadt marque a third victory.

However, as much as Ekstrom’s decision is good news for Audi, it’s yet another nail in the coffin for Mercedes, which had made a serious effort to sign him once it got wind that BMW had made an offer.

Gary Paffett is known to have favoured a top-line team-mate at HWA next year over a less-experienced driver, but he now has to face the fact that he is likely to start 2013 as the only one of the marque’s drivers to have won a DTM race.

The Bluegrass Battle

online racing

Alfalla (1) leads Daley (2), Hightower (3), Mojica (5), and Blackford (4) out of Turn Two.

Fresh off a week of short track racing, Week Eight of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (fixed setup) took the sim racers on a trip to the Bluegrass State for a bumpy and fast ride at the Kentucky Speedway. With over 1,200 online racers making at least one start during the week, it was a great battle to watch as this week’s Strength of Field involved many drivers who are considered the best at what they do.

This week’s high Strength of Field event took place on December 21st and included six current and former NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship competitors. Byron Daley (New York) led the NiSWC wave leading 31 of the race’s 45 laps to take the victory by 0.490 seconds over fellow NiSWC competitor Bryan Blackford (Florida) in the 4214 SoF. Former NiSWC competitor and current NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series competitor Pedro Mojica (Texas) finished in the third position after turning the fastest lap during the race. The NiSWC trend continues as Marcus Lindsey (Indiana) finished in the fourth position and Georgia native Brandon Williamson rounded out the top five after starting from the 13th position. The remaining two NiSWC and NiPS competitors in the field were two time champion Ray Alfalla (Florida) and Josh Berry (Mid-South) who made contact early in the race which left Berry heading toward the garage with heavy damage to his Silverado. Alfalla was able to recover slightly better, finishing in the 11th position after battling for the lead early in the going.

With a thrilling victory in the week’s high SoF, Daley left Kentucky with the most championship points on the week, adding 264 to his season total as he attempts to claim the Season Four championship. Blackford’s second place effort earned him a solid 248 points as he looks to break into the top five in overall standings. While Alfalla’s finish in the week’s high SoF race wasn’t what he was looking for, his performance in the three other races he competed in during the week was good enough to earn him 246 points. John William (Carolina) ended Week Eight in the fourth position, earning 232 points for his efforts. Lindsey’s fourth place effort in the week’s SoF event earned him 217 championship points.

motorsports simulation

Daley (2), Darren Armitage (17), and Blackford (4) work their way up through the field.

The king of the hotlap is back at it once again as he put his name on top of qualifying chart for Week Eight. Simon Crochart’s (France) time of 31.585 seconds was the fastest time of the week by 0.011 seconds over second place qualifier Ryan Luza (Texas). Ken H O’Keefe (Eastern Canada) finished in the third position, just 0.002 seconds behind Luza. Jason Jacoby (Georgia) and Thomas Davis (Mid-South) filled the remaining spots in the top five.

After eight competitive weeks of online racing, Daley holds a 204 point lead over second place driver Berry. Jordan Hightower (Mid-South) sits in the third position, 226 out of the lead. Alfalla sits in the fourth position, 454 points back, and rounding out the top five is Jason Jacoby, who is 467 points back.

Keep a bookmark of inRacingNews.com handy because next week the NiCCS (fixed setup) makes a trip to the NASCAR homeland for some racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Also, be sure to head on over to iRacing.com to be part of the action and you could win a Logitech G27 wheel and pedal set by claiming any of the Season Four divisional championships in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (fixed setup) or by being chosen at random from iRacers running the Logitech logo in any series. Porsche 911 Projection Video

Porsche has become the latest automaker to take advantage of clever projection technology. The automaker worked up a quick presentation for the 2013 911 Carrera 4S to show off a bit of "motionless driving." The display tracks the sports car from production to back-road caning and city-center cruising, displaying a variety of exterior color choices and wheel options without resorting to a two-dimensional video.

This isn't the first time we've seen an automaker use its new product as a projection screen. Subaru, Hyundai, Lamborghini and others have all done the same, and the trick never fails to be visually interesting.

As you may recall, we got to play with the 2013 911 Carrera 4S back in November and found the machine to be a better daily driver than its rear-wheel drive counterpart. You can check out the projection video below.

The NBBL Files: Weinshall Got Randy Mastro Before the Paint on PPW Was Dry

Editor’s note: Yesterday an appellate panel prolonged the legal assault on the Prospect Park West redesign, ruling that a lower court will have to hold a hearing on the question of whether the PPW bike lane was installed as a “trial” or as a permanent redesign. Of course, the case has never really been about the legality of the Prospect Park West redesign, which was implemented after an extensive public process and is doing exactly what Park Slope residents wanted it to do: reduce speeding, improve pedestrian crossings, and provide a safe north-south bikeway. The lawsuit is just a clever way to sling mud at NYC DOT in the press.

With the tabloids once again reprinting comically outlandish accusations from Jim Walden, the high-powered attorney and rumored Brooklyn DA hopeful who’s representing the PPW opponents, now is a good time to review what the Prospect Park West story is really all about: a few extremely well-connected people who doggedly refused to accept the legitimate outcome of the public planning process, using their extensive contacts in New York City media and politics to throw an epic tantrum. Throughout the day Streetsblog will be reprinting our six-part series, “The NBBL Files,” which explored these connections.

This piece originally ran on October 3, 2011.

Last week, opponents of the Prospect Park West redesign moved to appeal Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Bert Bunyan’s decision to reject their complaint against the city. If the community board’s approval of the bike lane and the data showing its effect on speeding and safety didn’t persuade them not to sue in the first place, a judicial decision wasn’t going to persuade them now. The longer the litigation drags on, the more time they’ll have to muddy the truth (to borrow a phrase from the Brooklyn Paper).

Since the case is still in the courts, though, we’ve also got more time to get a clearer look at the anti-bike lane group “Neighbors for Better Bike Lanes.” Based on email correspondence obtained via freedom of information request, we now have a better sense of NBBL’s methods — how they’ve exploited their connections to politicians, media personalities, city bureaucrats, and various New York City power players in their attempt to erase the new bike lane in their neighborhood.

Randy Mastro offered pro bono legal representation to Iris Weinshall and Neighbors for Better Bike Lanes immediately after the bike lane was installed. Mastro photo: New York Post

Let’s begin with the connection that set the lawsuit on its path to becoming a media spectacle: NBBL’s access to Gibson Dunn partner Randy Mastro.

Actually, first let’s pause to appreciate a classic NBBL exercise in muddying the truth. In the run-up to suing the city, you may recall that NBBL adopted the posture of reluctant litigants. “Much has been said about a potential legal action; we hope not to be forced to bring one,” said their attorney, Gibson Dunn partner Jim Walden, shortly before filing the suit. At the time, in late February, NBBL and Walden had been grabbing headlines for a few weeks, talking about litigation as a supposed last resort.

In fact, his firm had been planning a lawsuit with former DOT Commissioner Iris Weinshall and the leaders of NBBL for more than seven months. Gibson Dunn provided this service “pro bono.” The person who first offered the use of the firm’s resources to assist Weinshall was Mastro, who co-chairs Gibson Dunn’s litigation arm.

Weinshall and Mastro were not strangers. Both served in Rudy Giuliani’s mayoral administration – Mastro as chief of staff and later first deputy mayor, Weinshall as a high-ranking official in the Department of Citywide Administrative Services and then as DOT commissioner.

On July 3, 2010, Weinshall emailed her daughter, Jessica Schumer, a recent graduate of Yale Law School who campaigned vigorously against the bike lane that summer. “Spoke with Randy mastro he said he would help you with the article 78!” she wrote [PDF]. (An “Article 78″ refers to the type of lawsuit opponents eventually filed in their bid to tarnish DOT and erase the bike lane.)

DOT had just finished installing the bike lane the month before. Practically before the paint was dry, Weinshall had enlisted a lawyer who runs one of the nation’s top litigation practices — a man who represents the world’s corporate behemoths in court — to help wage her local NIMBY battle.

Schumer herself connected with Mastro two weeks later. “Just got off the phone with randy mastro and I’m pretty sure we have pro-bono representation from a top nyc law firm (gibson dunn),” she wrote in a message [PDF] to NBBL president Louise Hainline and another member of the group, Lisa Napolitano.

Then on July 22, Hainline wrote to fellow bike lane opponent Lois Carswell [PDF] to inform her that “the Randy Mastro connection has gotten us two attorney’s at Randy’s firm” as well as “many interns or first year attorneys.”

When law firms donate their time and energy to clients who are not poor (Hainline and Carswell own some of the most desirable real estate in Brooklyn), it’s considered ethical practice for a committee to decide if the case is appropriate for pro bono work. Gibson Dunn has not responded to inquiries about whether their pro bono committee voted on giving NBBL free legal services.

We don’t know exactly why Mastro agreed to help Weinshall. Neither of them would comment for this piece. We do know, however, that Weinshall was concerned about that information leaking out. On February 6, 2011, after Hainline mentioned that NPR’s Andrea Bernstein had been asking about Mastro, Weinshall wrote a short email in response. It said simply: “We should never say how we got Randy!”

Vandoorne takes Frijns’ place at Fortec

Stoffel Vandoorne Fortec has signed Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup champion Stoffel Vandoorne to take title-winner Robin Frijns’ place in its Formula Renault 3.5 line-up.

Frijns defeated Ferrari protege Jules Bianchi in a controversial season finale at Barcelona and became the first Fortec driver to win the FR3.5 crown.

The Dutchman has since been signed up as Sauber’s new Formula 1 reserve driver.

Vandoorne steps up to FR3.5 after overcoming Red Bull junior driver Daniil Kvyat in the feeder category’s 2012 title fight.

The 20-year-old Belgian won €500,000 towards a FR3.5 budget by claiming the two-litre category, and then tested with DAMS and Fortec post-season, setting a record pace during his Barcelona outing with Frijns’ former squad.

Other drivers confirmed for FR3.5 2013 so far include Vandoorne’s Eurocup rival Norman Nato and 2012 frontrunner Kevin Magnussen at DAMS, plus Auto GP star Sergey Sirotkin at ISR and race winner Arthur Pic at new team AV Formula.

Suzuki recalling 2,800 XL7 models over faulty fuel pump

A recall has been issued for the 2007 Suzuki XL7, but only those vehicles either bought or registered in four states: Texas, Arizona, California and Nevada. Potentially 2,380 of the SUVs manufactured from June 13, 2006 to December 22, 2006 could have an issue with their fuel pump modules: The plastic supply or return port could crack. If that happens, it could lead to a fuel leak and then to a fire.

Suzuki hasn't said when the recall will begin. Once it does, owners will be notified and can have their dealers make the necessary repairs free of charge. There's a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below with more information.

Official: Meet the 701-hp Mazzanti Evantra

If you've heard of upstart boutique supercar maker Mazzanti, we salute you. About a year ago, we brought you news of this small Italian firm, which then was under the name Faralli & Mazzanti. The creation was the Evantra, and as the name of the company has changed, so has the car. The Mazzanti Evantra has been updated, and the previous turbocharged flat-six has been replaced with a 7.0-liter V8. The six-cylinder had two versions, capable of 403 or 603 horsepower. That is kid's stuff compared to the V8, which can put out an astounding 701 horsepower and 624 pound-feet or toque. That power allows it to get from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds.

Other updates include a rear spoiler, reworked styling, and 20-inch OZ wheels wrapped in Continental tires. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a paddle-shift operated direct shift gearbox, developed specifically for the Evantra by transmission producer Sila. The lightweight supercar (curb weight not given for Evantra V8, but original was 2645 lbs. so we don't suspect its much more than that.) will be brought to a stop by Brembo brakes that are six-piston in the front and four-piston in the rear.

Other kit includes a racing-style instrument closer, Bosch infotainment system and an "infinite" number of cabin material selections. While the swatches may be infinite, the number of Evantra V8's being produced is very small - only five will be made. No pricing has been given, though we suspect the term "if you have to ask, you can't afford it," applies in these five examples.

2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix preview

Yas Marina Circuit facts & stats

The ultra-modern Yas Marina circuit hosts round 18 of the 2012 world championship. The track is located on a man-made island on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi and it's one of five anti-clockwise venues on this year's calendar. It has several unique features: the pit garages are air-conditioned, the pitlane exits through a tunnel under the track and it has the largest permanent lighting system in the world.

The 5.6km track weaves its way around a man-made marina and has three distinct sectors, each putting different demands on the car. Two high-speed corners start the lap; there are then two very long straights in the middle section and the last sector is tight and twisty. Such variety makes car set-up a compromise between high-speed balance, straight-line speed, good traction and braking stability.

The track surface is made from granite imported from the United Kingdom, and it's relatively high-grip and hard wearing. Pirelli will take their Soft and Medium tyre compounds to the race and they expect to see a mix of one and two-stop strategies.

Lewis won last year's race, while Jenson has finished on the podium in every grand prix staged at Yas Marina. After their fourth and fifth places in India last weekend, they're hoping for a return to the podium on Sunday.

Race distance 55 laps (189.747 miles/305.355km)

Circuit length 3.451 miles/5.554km

2011 winner Lewis Hamilton (Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) 55 laps in 1hr37m11.886s (188.494km/h)

Abu Dhabi record 2011 Q3 R3; 2010 Q4 R3; 2009 Q5 R3

"I'm really looking forward to this race weekend. I've always gone well around this track - I had a great battle with Mark Webber in 2009, and finished third, and Lewis and I have been on the podium together at the last two races.

"I think this will be another closely matched race: India showed us that the gap between the top three teams is extremely close at the moment, so I wouldn't like to predict the exact pecking order. As in the last few races, I think Red Bull will go into the weekend with a slight advantage, but I'm confident that, with a clear run through practice, we can be right up there too.

"One of the most satisfying aspects of the Indian Grand Prix was that we could battle cleanly at the front - that was fantastic. While it'll be quite tough to overtake around here - even with DRS - I'm hopeful that we can have another great battle, which would be fantastic for the fans."

Car 4: Lewis Hamilton

Abu Dhabi record 2011 Q2 R1; 2010 Q2 R2; 2009 Q1 R-

"The facilities in Abu Dhabi are absolutely fantastic - probably the best of any circuit in the world. I've always enjoyed the Yas Marina circuit - I took pole here in 2009 and led until my retirement, finished second in 2010 and won it last year - that's a pretty good record.

"It's a track where you can really push the car, which is what I most enjoy. There are a wide variety of corners - I love the fast sweeps in the first sector - and it's incredibly satisfying to hook together a good sector through the tricky marina section of the lap. Good mechanical balance makes all the difference here because you're always changing direction.

"This has also been a place where Red Bull have traditionally gone well, but our race pace was very strong throughout the race in New Delhi. I really enjoyed that race India - fourth place may have been little reward for 60 laps of flat-out effort, but I couldn't have gone any faster.

"I feel confident that we can pull together a strong race weekend in Abu Dhabi."

Martin Whitmarsh

Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

"Another race just a week after the last gives us the perfect opportunity to maintain the positive momentum we gathered during Sunday's grand prix in India. Both Jenson and Lewis drove their hearts out, and, although we weren't able to match the Red Bulls in qualifying, their pace on Sunday afternoon, particularly during the second half of the race, was impressively strong.

"The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team has always gone well in Abu Dhabi - Lewis set a stunning pole at the first-ever grand prix in 2009 and led until his retirement; the last time, in fact, that we failed to get two cars home in the points. Additionally, in 2010, both Jenson and Lewis finished on the podium, while Lewis finally delivered on two years' promise by winning spectacularly last year.

"It's a circuit that both drivers enjoy, and which plays to our cars' strengths, so I feel confident that we'll have a strong race weekend."

The Yas Marina circuit is an interesting challenge for the teams and drivers. Here's how Vodafone McLaren Mercedes defined three days in the short history of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

November 01 2009

Lewis is in brilliant form. He takes pole position by a massive 0.6s and beats Sebastian Vettel into Turn 1 at the start of the race. But his progress soon begins to falter, due to a rear brake problem on his MP4-24. He keeps Vettel at bay until his first pitstop on lap 17 but retires soon afterwards.

November 14 2010

To win the four-way world title showdown, Lewis needs to win and his rivals have to falter. He drags the maximum out of his MP4-25 all weekend: he qualifies second, just 0.031s behind pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel, and he finishes the race second. Vettel is champion. Jenson's third place secures McLaren's second position in the Constructors' Championship.

November 13 2011

Lewis lines up second on the grid, but there's no stopping him in the race. Pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel retires with a puncture on the opening lap and Lewis disappears into the distance. He comes home eight seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso. Jenson is third in the second MP4-26.

Get to Know: DJ Lyon, Part 1

Before I start, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I hope everyone is enjoying this special time of year. Since joining the inRacingNews gang back in the summer I have been able to interview 23 iRacers, starting with NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series driver Cody Byus. Whether it was interviewing the second place points finisher in the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship points, Michael Conti, iRacing.com Grand Prix Series World Championship contender Pablo Lopez, or simply a young driver like Daltyn England, my interviews have shown that iRacing has a variety of talented drivers. For the final driver interview of 2012, I have decided to interview a driver that many of you may know.

Daniel “Dan” James Lyon, or as his friends in North Carolina call him “DJ,” has been on the iRacing service since June of 2008, an outstanding 4.5 years. In the time he has been on iRacing, he has accomplished plenty. DJ has started 749 races on the oval side of iRacing and has won nearly 200 races. He is also among the very elite group of iRacers who have surpassed the 5000 iRating mark. With these stats, you can tell he is no stranger to running-up front, and in part one of my interview with him, I talked to him about how he got into sim racing, and his thoughts about the holiday season.

DJ conducting an interview at Concord Speedway.

Q:     How long have you been sim racing?
A:    I have been sim-racing since I was nine years old. I started offline with NASCAR 2 running an old joystick and I loved racing at Darlington and Bristol. I’d wake up early in the morning before school and practice trying to get below 16 seconds at Bristol.

I started online with NASCAR 3 and my first screen name ever was 3CrankMe. I’m not 100% sure where that name came from, but my first online race was at IRP and I was instantly fast and seemed to take to it really well. I was asked if I could share my setup because this one guy had a “league” race. I had no clue what “leagues” were, but little did I know that three months later I’d be racing seven nights a week in leagues. Then it is history from there, I ran NASCAR 3 forever it seems, and only got NASCAR 4 so I could flip the car at Infineon for a few hours, then right back to GOSIMRacing.com 24/7 Talladega servers. Then it was NR2002 and NR2003. I didn’t get my first wheel until NASCAR 2003, which was a black momo.

Q:    What type of racing do you like to watch on TV?
A:    I obviously watch NASCAR, but I do enjoy watching dirt late models when they are on TV. Dirt racing is by far the more specialized form of racing because it requires, in my opinion, more talent than asphalt racing does.

Q:    When there is no racing on TV during the winter, what do you watch instead?
A:    When racing is not on in the winter, I watch football; I’m a huge Buffalo Bills fan. (Not as bad as it seems haha.) I love watching The Walking Dead and Duck Dynasty, other than that, I’m not really a big TV watcher.

Q:    Which race car driver do you look up to the most?
A:    The race car driver I look up to the most would have to be Ernie Irvan. With everything that he went through in his career and to then come back and win again, not only showed determination but guts and I have to respect a guy for doing what he loves to do, no matter what the cause.

Q:    What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received?
A:    Many Christmas ago, when I was very young, I got a puppy for Christmas and we named him “Spike.” Spike grew up with me and stayed with me through my father’s death. Nothing is more special to a man besides family, then his dog.

Lyon (#24) is closing-on the 200 win mark on iRacing.

Q:    What are you going to do tomorrow on Christmas Day?
A:    Christmas day will be spent with my family in Pittsburgh and then it’s off to North Carolina to meet up with some friends. I love traveling home at this time of the year to see old friends and family and of course, play in the snow! (I might whip a few doughnuts before heading back south!) I also have to give a huge shout out to my mom, whose pumpkin cookies are the best! (If anyone wants to know how to get me to do anything, just give me a pumpkin cookie with cream cheese frosting!)

Tune-in next week to read Part Two of my interview with DJ; my final interview in 2012!

Superspeedway Testing Key in Developing Rules Package For 2013 NASCAR Fusion

Ford Racing
Ford Racing
• In preparation for the season-opening Daytona 500 in February, NASCAR teams participated in a recent test session at Talladega Superspeedway.

• The Talladega test represented the first on-track appearance for Penske Racing with Ford Racing since it announced earlier this year it would be returning for the 2013 season.

• The 2013 NASCAR Fusion will make its highly-anticipated debut in competition during Daytona Speedweeks, which begins with the Daytona Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 16 and concludes with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24.

DEARBORN, MI, (Dec. 19, 2012) – It’s only been a month since the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season came to an end, but teams and fans alike are already looking forward to what lies ahead next year with the debut of cars like the all-new 2013 NASCAR Fusion.

And while many will be taking a break to celebrate the upcoming holidays with family and friends, most race shops will continue humming as teams build and prepare the new models for competition. The primary focus at the moment is Daytona Speedweeks, which is only two months away, and getting ready for the season-opening Daytona Shootout and Daytona 500.

Besides having a new Fusion to run with in 2013, Ford Racing will also welcome Penske Racing back to the program. Car owner Roger Penske is coming off his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in 2012 as driver Brad Keselowski captured the crown in only his third full season. The Penske organization, which also includes drivers Joey Logano and Sam Hornish Jr., got their first on-track work with Fusion during a recent test at Talladega Superspeedway.

“Ford probably did the best job in terms of what NASCAR wanted,” said Hornish, who handled driving duties at the test. “NASCAR gave them the opportunity to give their race car a little bit more of the look of the actual street car. If you basically slinked up your car and made it into a street race car, this is what it could look like. I think they did a really good job of that and bringing out the character of the car.”

Vice President of Operations for Penske Racing, Mike Nelson, agreed and said, “We’re excited about the Fusion and the way it looks. There’s a lot of buzz about it in the garage and in the shop, so it’s been good so far. It means a lot to the fans and it means a lot to us as well. It’s nice to be able to look at the street car and look at the race car and see the similarities between the two. They’re identical and it’s cool for everyone.”

That individual brand identity among manufacturers was a key element toward instituting this new-generation car, but questions about components like the cooling system was one of the main reasons for having the Talladega test.

“It’s been a challenge to get all the correct features in the car within the design parameters and still having the car competitive,” said Ford Racing aerodynamicist Bernie Marcus. “At the end of the day you can have the best-looking car, but if it doesn’t work on the track, that’s not going to be good so we have to have both. We have to have the looks and the performance.”

Finding the right balance that will allow the cars to remain competitive and put on a good show for the fans is NASCAR’s ultimate goal while making it to victory lane and winning championships is the primary focus for Ford Racing officials and its teams.

“There’s been cooperation to get to the end goal of making the cars look the same on the race track,” said Pat DiMarco, Ford Racing NASCAR program manager. “We’ve done that over the past few months and now we’re working towards our goal of winning the Daytona 500.”

Ford Racing has won the Daytona 500 two straight seasons and three of the last four overall. The next chance for teams to test their superspeedway cars will be Jan. 10-12 at Daytona International Speedway.

In Memoriam

When the book is written on the fight for traffic justice in New York City, an entire chapter might well be devoted to 2012.

This was the year when Commissioner Ray Kelly’s NYPD revealed to the City Council that only a handful of officers are assigned to investigate serious traffic crashes. The public learned that, per department policy, the majority of crashes are handled by precinct cops who are trained and authorized to fill in boxes on a form, and nothing more, effectively denying the possibility of justice to thousands who suffer life-altering injuries at the hands of motorists each year. That this policy is in violation of state law apparently mattered not at all to the police commissioner, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, or Albany.

In 2012, victims whose lives were ended by reckless drivers ranged in age from 2 to 92. Two small boys were fatally struck as their horrified and helpless parents looked on. A high school football player with college prospects was run over by two drivers while riding his bike. A veteran UPS man on his regular rounds was crushed to death on a sidewalk. A grandmother of 22 who survived Auschwitz was killed by a driver in pursuit of a parking spot.

It was a landmark year for institutional failure. A spike in traffic fatalities coincided with a marked drop in NYPD enforcement. Criminal cases against killer motorists were wrecked by policeprosecutorsjudges, and juries. Standing on a city street corner, the U.S. secretary of transportation wrongly blamed most pedestrians for their own deaths. The National Guard contributed to the toll wrought by Hurricane Sandy. NYC DOT admonished pedestrians to look out for careless drivers, yet made a mockery of that advice by refusing to own up to a DOT driver’s alleged responsibility for a fatal crash.

Because it must, the story continues. Some day the City Council will take up the proposed Crash Investigation Reform Act, which among other measures would form a task force charged with assessing NYPD crash investigation practices and recommending reforms. In the meantime, individual acts of vehicular violence have gained the attention of council members. Though results have been mixed, the city press corps is finally acknowledging the dangers of unsafe streets and virtually non-existent enforcement. Attorneys are advancing the cause of traffic justice in civil courts. Everyday citizens press on for improvements that are known to make neighborhoods safer to walk, bike and, yes, drive.

Here is our accounting of New York pedestrians and cyclists known to have lost their lives in traffic in 2012. In the comments, please share remembrances of those named here, and the names and stories of those we missed.
