Complete Streets Provision Eliminated From Final Transpo Bill

Transportation for America, the big-tent coalition for transportation reform, tends to be careful about the statements it puts out. Its folks are diplomatic, since they work with both sides on the Hill and a wide variety of coalition members. Yesterday, as details of the conference report were leaking out, they wanted to read the whole [...]

Bautista given grid penalty for clash

Alvaro Bautista will be put to the back of the Sachsenring MotoGP grid as a punishment for taking Jorge Lorenzo out of the Dutch TT. Championship leader Lorenzo's Yamaha was collected by Bautista's Gresini Honda at the first corner of the Assen race, when Bautista lost control under braking as he tried to dive down the inside of the front pack from eighth on the grid. Both riders were forced to retire, with Lorenzo's title rival Casey Stoner then wiping out the Spaniard's pre-race 25-point championship lead by taking victory

Raikkonen frustrated over lack of win

Kimi Raikkonen has admitted he is increasingly frustrated at still being winless eight races into his Formula 1 comeback as his and Lotus's strong form has raised his expectations. The 2007 world champion, back in F1 in 2012 after a two-year sojourn in the World Rally Championship, is sixth in the points at present and has taken three podium finishes. Raikkonen said that while he would have been delighted at the prospect of those results before he rejoined F1, the fact that he feels better results have got away is leaving him discontented

Nissan’s Leaf is first in nobody’s mind when it comes to any type of  traditionally defined performance. Report: Should GM and Ford give up on selling cars in Europe?

Ford barge Germany

The economic turmoil, lack of consumer confidence and howls for "More austerity!" in Europe have delivered a UFC-like beating to every automaker's books. And with some analysts still wondering if the current euro zone will even survive, it is obvious that it won't be over soon. But is that a reason for both General Motors and Ford to stop doing business on the continent, as Automotive News Editor-in-Chief for Europe Luca Ciferri has written?

The quick summary of Ciferri's reasons for suggesting GM and Ford pull out is that "Europe is the biggest trouble spot in GM's and Ford's global empires and could prevent both from sustaining their current success." Both are losing money there, are likely to lose money for a while, and have other profitable ventures they could focus on in China and a resurgent U.S. - and at least one analyst agrees with the suggestion.

Spefically, GM, via its Opel/Vauxhall subsidiary, has lost more than $15 billion in Europe over the past 13 years, $747 million of it in 2011 alone. Opel's current state remains so dire that GM CEO Dan Akerson calls it a "four-alarm fire" and there's another comprehensive restructuring being presented this week, following last year's comprehensive restructuring that was meant to fix the same issues. A commentary in Ward's Auto posits that perhaps short-lived GM CEO Fritz Henderson was right to want to get rid of Opel and is owed an apology. The best that GM can say about the position in Europe right now is that "it appears to be bottoming out," but Greece returning to the drachma or another large dose of pain in Spain could put the lie to that assessment. For Ciferri, the drag right now on profitable earnings elsewhere and the murky future might not be worth the trouble.

Ciferri's case for a Ford exit seems a little pressed, even though the company is estimating a half-billion dollar loss in Europe this year. Growth and margins are on the downswing, Volkswagen rules the roost and that isn't likely to change soon, and the Blue Oval owns a factory in Romania that is producing the upcoming B-Max, but because it was bought when markets were humming it is now adding to Ford's European overcapacity. Nevertheless, every automaker is dealing with losses, negative growth and slim margins, Ford has been profitable there six of the past eight years, is still number two in Europe and builds some of the most popular cars on The Continent. GM is determined to weather the storm, but in Ford's case it seems more like it would be foolish not to.

On top of all of that, having two major industrial concerns - both are in the top five in sales - tell already hard-put European governments, workers and buyers, "We're going home now, call us when things get better. Good luck," would practically ensure neither GM nor Ford would earn another euro until everyone involved was making cars in heaven.

Chasing Perfection: 1000 Miles in the McLaren MP4-12C

People who don’t own supercars and have never driven one often wonder why owners don’t rack up tens of thousands of miles on them each year. How Dampers Work: We Slice Open Four Types of Shock Absorbers

Shock absorbers (a.k.a. suspension dampers) are the unsung heroes of ride and handling. Lacking them, your car would porpoise over bumps and flounder on its springs through bends. As their name suggests, these tubular oil-filled devices damp (slow down) wheel and body motion, resulting in a comfortable ride, predictable steering response, and agile maneuverability. A [...]

Official: 2013 Jaguar XJ replaces 5.0L V8 with supercharged V6

Jaguar has announced a few updates for the 2013 XJ, the most significant of which is the availability of an all-new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. The six-cylinder is good for 335 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque and is bolted to a new eight-speed automatic gearbox with a start-stop function. All told, the changes should help the big four-door yield a 14 percent improvement in fuel economy over the old naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 and its six-speed transmission.

While no Environmental Protection Agency numbers have been released as of yet, our quick math indicates the 2013 XJ could crank out 18 miles per gallon city, 26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. That fuel economy does come with a price, however. The delicious 5.0-liter V8 currently serves up 50 more horsepower and 49 more lb-ft of torque compared to the new force-fed six.

In addition to the drivetrain changes, Jaguar reworked the spring and damper rates for better on-road comfort, and a new 825 Meridian sound system is also part of the mix. Check out the full press blast below.

Alonso wins thrilling European GP

Fernando Alonso came through from 11th on the grid to take a remarkable home victory in the European Grand Prix in Valencia. The result made the Ferrari driver the first repeat winner of the incredible 2012 Formula 1 season, and also moved Alonso into the championship lead. The latter outcome was due in large part to Sebastian Vettel retiring with a mechanical problem on his Red Bull after dominating the first half of the race, and Lewis Hamilton's McLaren retiring late on in a collision with Pastor Maldonado's Williams as they fought for third.

Report: Ecclestone says New Jersey F1 "definitely" not going to happen in 2013

Filed under:

Six months ago, we were going to have two Formula One grands prix in America in 2013 - the Austin round at the Circuit of the Americas track and the Grand Prix of America on the streets of New Jersey. Then, three months ago, F1 impresario Bernie Ecclestone told BBC Sport that the event could be pushed back to 2014, without elaborating as to why. This week, Bernie's told BBC Sport again that "No. Definitely no," the NJ race wouldn't go down in 2013, this time clarifying that it's because he doesn't expect the track to be ready.

He then backtracked by by saying it's still possible if the track is ready, and that "If they can get it completed and confirm to us it will be done, for sure, they'll be on the calendar." The event organizers say they're ahead of schedule, but Ecclestone said he's not as confident as they are. This month Sebastian Vettel drove the course and declared it "nowhere near ready," but that's to be expected since the race is a year away.

The Grand Prix of America has as much time as time to get a street circuit prepared as Austin did to get a dedicated track done, and so far, the GPoA hasn't suffered any of the funding and construction snafus that plagued Austin. We don't know what Ecclestone knows, but he doubted Austin's prospects as well and here they are, so we'll keep the faith in New Jersey.

Superb Harvey takes double pole

Jack Harvey has taken his second successive British Formula 3 International Series double pole position, following up his Rockingham effort from two weeks ago by going fastest on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. The Briton outpaced championship leader Jazeman Jaafar by less than a tenth of a second, with the margin just 0.016s on second-fastest times, which decide the grid for this afternoon's opening race.

iRacer Profile – Kay Kaschube

Next time you find yourself going wheel-to-wheel with Kay Kaschube at Phillip Island, consider giving him a wide berth in Turn Two (aka Southern Loop).  After all, he just might be inclined to return to his racing roots and head straight for the waters of the Bass Strait.  You see Kaschube cut his racing on the waters of Europe: vice champion of the 2010 German Powerboat Championship, he finished in the top five of the FR1000 class championship every year since 2008.  You could say racing is in his blood, as his father — Udo — won the 2011 European Powerboat championship. On the water or the digital tracks of iRacing, winning is in Kaschube’s blood.  He captured the Corvette class title of the 2012 S1 iRacing.com Prototype/GT Challenge (open [...]

Report: NHTSA opens investigations on Chrysler 200 and Ford Explorer

2011 Chrysler 200

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened new investigations concerning the Chrysler 200 and Ford Explorer. All of the vehicles in question are from the 2011 model year, with 87,000 200s and 83,000 Explorers being investigated.

NHTSA's Chrysler investigation concerns possible stalling problems, with the organization stating that it has received 15 complaints of the 200's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 stalling. "All 15 incidents reported stalling without warning during low-speed decelerations such as braking for a stop sign or traffic light," NHTSA's official release states. This investigation does involve both the sedan and convertible models.

2011 Ford ExplorerMoving to the Explorer, NHTSA is investigating reports of power steering failure with the electric power-assisted system. In some instances, owners have complained that the system completely stops working, while other drivers simply noted greater effort being needed to turn the wheel. NHTSA writes:

"Some of the complaints indicated observing a power steering warning message when the failure occurred. In some cases, the condition was corrected by turning the vehicle off and restarting. However, some reports indicate the condition returned after restart."

No accidents have been linked to either the Ford or Chrysler issues.

Keep in mind, these investigations are not recalls - merely a way for NHTSA to probe a certain model and determine if an official recall is actually necessary. Click here and here to read both of the NHTSA investigation reports.

Kanaan, Viso to get engine penalties

Tony Kanaan and EJ Viso have both been given 10-place grid penalties for this weekend's IndyCar Series race at Iowa after their KV Racing Technology squad opted to change the Chevrolet engines in both drivers' cars. Brazilian driver Kanaan, 37, took his best finish of the year last weekend at Milwaukee with second place behind Ryan Hunter-Reay. Viso's fifth spot was also his best of 2012.

Juho Hanninen holds a 26.8-second lead over seven-time event winner Freddy Loix in the Ypres Rally after Andreas Mikkelsen went off the road on the opening evening. Skoda driver Hanninen has led the event, round six of the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, from the outset, steadily edging away from Mikkelsen (Skoda UK) through the opening stages. Motorsports: Chevrolet Camaro tours overseas as new safety car for World Touring Car Championship [w/video]

Chevrolet Camaro WTCC safety car

Seeing a Chevrolet Camaro setting the pace at a NASCAR or Indy race is not uncommon, but its latest tour of duty has taken GM's modern ponycar to another form of racing altogether: the World Touring Car Championship.

The WTCC pits race-prepped sedan and hatchback touring cars against each other on tracks across Europe and around the world. Considering that the factory-backed Chevrolet Cruze has emerged over the past couple of seasons as the car to beat in WTCC competition, perhaps its only fitting that another Chevy act as safety car.

The Safety Ca(r)maro, as it's been dubbed, appears pretty much bone stock, though we'd assume it has had the necessary safety gear fitted, like a roll cage, five-point harness and fire supression system. But as it stands, its 430-horsepower V8 is about 40% more powerful than the restricted engines in the touring cars it's keeping at bay. Scroll on down for the full press release and video clip.
