Calbimonte joins T-Sport for Spa

Ex-Formula Renault UK racer Pedro Pablo Calbimonte will become the first Bolivian to compete in the British Formula 3 International Series next week.

Calbimonte, 21, will make his F3 debut at Spa-Francorchamps driving a National Class Dallara-Mugen Honda run by T-Sport.

He joins current National Class leader Spike Goddard and A-class runner Nick McBride as the T-Sport squad expands to three cars. It means that the National Class will grow to a season-best four, including Double R Racing’s Duvashen Padayachee and CF Racing runner Adderly Fong.

Calbimonte had his maiden test on Thursday at Anglesey.

“I was really impressed by the car, particularly the grip in fast corners,” he said. “I think I had a good day, but it was hard and I was very tired by the end. I have to work on my fitness, but they say the best training comes with time in the car.

“Spa will not be easy because I have never driven the circuit, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Calbimonte, who is understood to be also contesting the following British F3 round at Snetterton, only returned to car racing last year for an incomplete season of Formula Renault with Fortec Motorsport.

He had made an encouraging first step in European single-seaters back in 2007, when he briefly competed in Spain’s Master Junior Formula (for old-spec Formula BMW cars) against drivers including F3 Euro Series leader Daniel Juncadella, who will also be on the grid at Spa as it doubles up as a round of the FIA European F3 Championship.
