Name That Shifter, No. 89: 1984 Renault Fuego 2.2

Name That Shifter 89

Shifter No. 89On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. We were counting on this week’s contest to stump you, but it turns out we didn’t dig quite deep enough. A few of you figured out that this week’s shifter came from the 1984 Renault Fuego 2.2. The first commenter to mostly correctly identify it was repeat winner Ram Narayan—Ram was slightly off with his guess that the shifter belonged to the Turbo model.

The Fuego pictured here is from our June 1984 issue. Introduced in the U.S. in 1981, the funny-looking Renault (which was peddled Stateside by AMC, along with the dreadful Alliance) received a new, more-powerful base four-cylinder engine for 1984. Displacement jumped from 1.6 liters to 2.2, though output increased only marginally, from 82 hp to 91. A turbocharged model was available, but it only shaved 0.6 second off of the 2.2’s 10.6-second 0-to-60-mph time.
