First of all, we need to make it clear how disappointed we are that Car and Driver legend Csaba Csere has not made an appearance at the race we (sort of) named after him. He must have more important things to do, but we can’t imagine what could be more important than watching Fiat’s miserably underpowered mid-engined sports car stomp on a bunch of BMWs and Porsches at Road America. Sure, this X1/9 has a bit more power than it had when it came from the factory, thanks to the 228-horsepower Alfa Romeo 164 V6 that’s been swapped in place of the factory powerplant, but it’s still impressive that the Launcha Splatos Fiat ended today’s race session with a single-lap lead over the Clueless Racing Honda CRX.
