New team RAM to compete in ELMS

A new British team called RAM Racing will launch an attack on the European Le Mans Series with a pair of GTE class Ferrari 458 Italias.

Silverstone-based RAM has been set up by Dan Shufflebottom, who was formerly Michael Schumacher’s number one mechanic at the Mercedes Formula 1 team, and an anonymous backer from the Middle East.

The team will run two cars in the ELMS and plan to make one entry for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

RAM will run with two pro-am driver line-ups in the five-race ELMS after the organiser’s decision to do away with GTE Pro. Should it land an entry for Le Mans, it will run three professional drivers.

Shufflebottom, 32, said: “Our goal is to under-promise and over-deliver because otherwise you’re just going to disappoint people from the outset. We may be relatively new at running our own team, but we know what it takes.”

The first driver signed for RAM’s 2013 programme is sportscar stalwart Johnny Mowlem, who has been a Lotus factory driver for the past two years and also raced for the Risi Competizione Ferrari squad in the American Le Mans Series in 2006-07.

Mowlem said: “I’m delighted to be involved in a team that is doing everything properly. I am sure we are going to be very competitive.”

RAM, which has no connection with the Formula 1 team of the same name of the 1970s and ’80s, will make its competition debut in next month’s Dubai 24 Hours with a GT3 version of the 458.
