Week Four in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) reminded many competitors of how much of a love-hate relationship Pocono Raceway can be. Best described as a total oddity, the 2.5 mile circuit located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania features three vastly different corners that provide headaches for not only drivers, but crew chiefs as well. That combined with the longest straightaway in NASCAR, where speeds will top 210mph, Pocono is always circled on the NiCAS calendar.
While some drivers steer clear from the challenge presented by the Tricky Triangle, others wrap their arms around it with relative ease. The top rated race of the week was settled on Sunday night, with a unique mix of veterans, and relative newcomers to the big stage, all within the top five. As participation took a slight dip due to the challenging track, Sunday’s 4227 SoF also decided the overall top five in points for the week.
Brad Davies was able to make the most of his return to the NiCAS by getting out front, and holding off Michael Conti throughout late pit stops to grab the win and the 265 points to put him atop the pylon for the week. Davies and Conti dominated the strong field, leading 62 of the 70 laps in a race that went caution free. NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) veteran Brian Schoenburg rounded out the top three, while his teammate, and NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) driver Carson Downs slotted in behind him. Brandon Buie did not go unnoticed, putting in another solid top five run to put him fifth on the week with 202 points.
Two familiar names topped the most active drivers on the week, at a track where their efforts are medal worthy. Howard Bell and James Robinson started thirteen races each, tallying a total of 1,644 laps around the monstrous 2.5 mile speedway between the two. Bell and Robinson were the only drivers on the week with over ten starts, and although neither were able to find victory lane, Bell managed the most success with a top five in over half his starts.
Next week is a small step back to normalcy, as the NiCAS heads to the 1.5 mile Kentucky Speedway, located in Sparta Kentucky. This track presents a unique set of challenges to setup gurus as the Chevy Impala will want to bottom out in the extremely bumpy and line sensitive turns one and two, while turns three and four offer a smoother, less sensitive approach. The beautiful Kentucky Speedway always provides us with some of the best door to door racing of the season, and it will all be settled under the lights, so head over to iRacing.com and strap in for a wild NiCAS Week Five.
