Front Row Motorsports Announces 2013 plans
GP2 reveals 11-round 2013 schedule
The organisers of the GP2 Series have announced the championship’s 2013 calendar, with Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit hosting the final round.
The 11-round schedule will kick off at Sepang on March 22-24, coinciding with the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The series will then follow the same pattern as last year before finishing in Abu Dhabi, which replaces Singapore as the final round of the championship on 1-3 November. The Singapore event has been moved to September.
Unlike this year, GP2 will have a single round in Bahrain in 2013 and the Valencia round has been dropped.
“2013 will be another strong season for GP2. We have decided to keep the prestigious tracks outside of Europe, starting with Sepang and Sakhir, two venues which provided some heart-stopping action last season,” said GP2 boss Bruno Michel.
“I am very pleased to be closing the season in Abu Dhabi: we have been to that track several times with GP2 Asia and raced there last time in November 2011 with our latest generation car.
“Since the series started in 2005, we have always provided the drivers with a car close to F1 in performance and used the same tyres.
“This package guarantees the GP2 drivers to gain the ultimate and most-needed experience to graduate to the next category.
“Our sole goal has always been and will continue to remain to prepare the next generation of F1 drivers. I believe that’s exactly what we will see again in 2013 and I am really looking forward to next season.”
Organisers have also confirmed pre-season tests at Jerez on 26-28 February and Barcelona on 5-7 March.
2013 calendar
22-24 March Sepang, Malaysia
19-21 April Sakhir, Bahrain
10-12 May Barcelona, Spain

05-07 July Nurburg, Germany
26-28 July Budapest, Hungary

Frijns: Vandoorne can thrive as rookie
2012 Formula Renault 3.5 champion Robin Frijns believes his Fortec replacement Stoffel Vandoorne can thrive under the relatively low expectations of his rookie season.
Vandoorne graduates into the FR3.5 after triumphing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, just as Frijns did in 2011.
Frijns went on to seal the title despite being a rookie and competing against a stellar grid which included a host of Formula 1 junior drivers.
Click here for AUTOSPORT’s Formula Renault 3.5 season review
Frijns, who has been signed up as Sauber’s new F1 reserve driver, tipped Vandoorne to surprise in next year’s campaign.
The 20-year-old Belgian broke Frijns’s lap record on the final day of FR 3.5 testing at Aragon in November.
“I think Vandoorne is going to do well, he was really quick in my car in testing,” Frijns told AUTOSPORT.
“He is like me [in 2012], a rookie, so he is more free than some of the other guys because he doesn’t have to win the championship in the first year.
“The more experienced guys have a lot more pressure to win the championship.”
Vandoorne earned €500,000 towards a FR3.5 budget after winning his two-litre crown, and also tested for DAMS during the off-season. He said choosing Fortec was an ‘easy’ decision however.
“My choice was quite easy between the teams I have tested for in FR3.5,” Vandoorne explained.
“I felt very good with Fortec straight away, and we showed some really good speed during the post-season tests.
“I’m happy that finally the deal is done, and I can start focusing on next year. The step from FR2.0 Eurocup to FR3.5 was quite big; the FR3.5 car has a lot more downforce and power compared to the FR2.0 car, but it’s a car I like to drive and I feel very comfortable in it.”
Team manager Jamie Dye tipped Vandoorne to feature in next year’s title fight, adding: “He has the attitude and drive to make his mark on the championship and I’m extremely confident he will be one to keep an eye on next season.”

The 2012 NYC Streetsies, Part 1
Streetsblog NYC is kicking off our annual awards bonanza with a look at the projects that did the most to improve walking, biking, and transit on New York City streets in 2012. Catch up on the people’s choice voting before you dive in, and stay tuned for more Streetsies before the new year.
Also, we are thisclose to reaching our year-end pledge drive goal. Please make a tax-deductible contribution to Streetsblog and Streetfilms and help us bring you coverage and commentary that makes a difference for NYC streets in 2013.
On to the Streetsies…
Best Livable Streets Story and Best Pedestrian Safety Project
When NYC DOT invited neighborhoods to apply for 20 mph slow zones, the agency triggered an overwhelming “Yes in My Backyard” response. Applications came in from all over the city. School kids in a Bronx neighborhood plagued by cut-through traffic wanted one. So did a City Council member from central Queens. So many neighborhoods wanted one, in fact, that there was no way to satisfy the demand. Not this year, at least. A lot of people were disappointed, but that’s also, in a way, what made the clamor for slow zones such a great story.

Photo: NYC Mayor's Office
Instead of the superficial, boilerplate story about street redesigns that the NYC dailies and evening newscasters excel at (It goes like this: A few people don’t understand why the street is changing, and they’re angry about losing a few free parking spots! The End.), all those slow zone applications got at something deeper. New Yorkers want their own neighborhood streets to be safe enough for their kids to play and for their grandparents to walk without fear. For that to happen, the streets need to change.
After logging some promising early results from the city’s first 20 mph slow zone, installed in Claremont last year, DOT expanded the program this summer to 13 more neighborhoods. These are low-cost improvements — stripes, signs, and speed humps — and they don’t yet measure up to London’s 20 mph zones, which save dozens of lives each year using more intensive traffic-calming treatments. But these first-generation slow zones can get upgraded later, and with the opt-in process DOT has set up, there’s every reason to expect that momentum for this type of traffic-calming will build as more neighborhoods ask for their own slow zones. The demand for safer streets isn’t going anywhere.
Best New Public Space
Sometimes, the popularity of a street reclamation project seems to be directly proportional to the volume of coverage about how “controversial” it is. The Streetsblog readers’ choice for best new public space of 2012 — Fort Greene’s Fowler Square Plaza – is a case in point. (See also: Prospect Park West.)
Most Fowler Square coverage was all about the hecklers at the planning meetings and the guys who kvetched over having to drive an extra block. Once the tables and chairs were laid out, though, most people seemed to agree that it’s just a great place to sit down, enjoy the neighborhood, and kibitz a bit. Good thing it’s here to stay.

Best Bike Project
When it comes to giving New Yorkers safe, comfortable bike access to where the jobs are, the West Side protected bike lane extension from 34th Street to 59th Street is probably the most significant NYC DOT bicycle project Streetsblog has ever covered. It’s making it a whole lot safer to walk in these parts, too. The new pedestrian islands and narrower traffic lanes will do wonders for blocks with epic amounts of foot traffic.
It looks like 2013 will be the year this project really shines, though. Once bike-share gets up and running, Eighth and Ninth Avenues will be bike highways to the West Side’s commuter transit hubs. And if everyone takes Gale Brewer’s advice, sometime next year there should be a nice new link to these protected bike lanes from points north.

The Eighth Avenue protected bike lane at 47th Street. Photo: Stephen Miller
Best Transit Project
The debut of Select Bus Service on Staten Island comes in a close second in this category. Thousands of riders each day are getting speedier bus trips on Hylan Boulevard with SBS in place. Top prize, though, goes to the rollout of Bus Time across all of Staten Island and the Bronx, bringing real-time bus location information to riders via smartphone and, lest we forget, text message. Millions of New Yorkers can take the guesswork out of waiting for the bus thanks to this one (which, full disclosure, was developed for the MTA by OpenPlans, Streetsblog’s parent organization).
Feel-Good Story of the Year
It’s getting to be a sub-genre unto itself on Streetsblog: the super-inspiring livable streets story out of Jackson Heights. Two years ago it was the march on Community Board 3 that won a summer-long car-free 78th Street. This year it was the merchants who, after lashing out against the new public plaza on 37th Road, turned around and embraced it, thanks to some outstanding mediation by Council Member Daniel Dromm and DOT (not to mention the merchants’ own self-interest). “Diversity Plaza” is going to be drawing potential customers to the heart of Jackson Heights for a long time.

Council Member Daniel Dromm joins with local business owners to announce the formation of "Sukhi NY," a new organization to serve as the steward for Diversity Plaza. Photo: Times-Ledger
The cherry on top: By recognizing that maintaining and caring for the plaza would be more profitable than orphaning it, the merchants demolished some meticulously constructed plazas-kill-local-business Times reportage.
The Safe Routes to School Award
DOT’s traffic-calming road diet for 50 blocks of Brooklyn’s Fourth Avenue is making a huge difference for Sunset Park families, who no longer have to worry about getting sandwiched between six lanes of screaming traffic while trying to balance on a narrow, two-foot wide median strip.
Best Use of Paint and Planters
The 49-foot curb extension at the northwest corner of Delancey and Clinton.
Most Satisfying Sight
After at least three rounds of community board votes, thousands of letters delivered to City Hall, and more than two years of waiting since the proposal was first unveiled by the city, East Harlem got its first protected bike lane segment on Second Avenue this fall. It wouldn’t have happened without leadership from Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and a posse of hardworking volunteers. Here’s the Streetfilm that tells the story:

Rossi, Lorenzo ‘will not stay friends’
Motorcycle racing legend Giacomo Agostini believes it is inevitable that Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi will renew hostilities over the course of the 2013 MotoGP season.
The 15-time world champion paralleled the pair’s relationship as team-mates to his own experiences with the likes of Mike Hailwood and Phil Read, saying it would be ‘impossible’ for them to remain amicable for the entire season.
Ex-Yamaha boss Masao Furusawa recently warned the pair’s renewed relationship could be unmanageable, although Lorenzo insisted that there would be no repeat of the wall which divided the Yamaha garage in 2010.
“Valentino and Jorge have grown up compared to when they were team-mates last time around, but it’s impossible for them to do a whole season as friends,” Agostini told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“When you have two roosters in the same hen house, one wants to be more of a rooster than the other one.
“I experienced that with Hailwood, Read and also with Bergamonti: the thing you desire most is to beat whoever races with the same bike as yours, because that’s where you see who is stronger.
“If you’re behind someone with a different bike then the situation is not as negative, because it’s an unbalanced comparison.”
Agostini’s conviction also stems from the fact he believes Rossi will be a title contender next year – although he still makes Lorenzo the favourite.
“Rossi will win again at Yamaha, but it won’t be easy,” Agostini said.
“I think he can win one or two races per year, but no domination like before: his rivals are younger and have improved.”
Asked to name a favourite, Agostini added: “Lorenzo – although if Pedrosa carries on riding like he did at the end of the season he will be tough.
“Valentino will be in the scrap because he will often step on the podium.”

SEB, WEB AND SEB RED BULL RACING'S 2012 DRIVER LINE-UP
Red Bull Racing
Thursday 5 January 2012
Red Bull Racing is pleased to confirm that Sébastien Buemi will continue his relationship with Red Bull as Red Bull Racing's test and reserve driver for 2012.
The 23-year-old joins Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, who are already confirmed.
Sébastien Buemi:
"It's good to remain with Red Bull for another year and have this opportunity with the World Championship winning team. I would prefer to be driving at the races of course, but working with Red Bull Racing on the development of their car and providing them with feedback throughout the season is the next best thing."
Christian Horner:
"It was entirely logical for Sébastien to continue with Red Bull having been a member of the Junior Team since 2004. He already knows the team well from his time with us in 2008 and has gained significant race experience over the past three years. He will complete important test and simulation work for us throughout the year and will be in attendance at each grand prix."

Video: Ford engineers going geek, using MakerBot 3D printers for prototype testing
Filed under: Etc., Technology, Videos, Ford

In an attempt to build future vehicles or improve upon current models, many automakers have turned to 3D printers to create and test new prototype parts. Considering how important new cars are, you'd think automakers would spare no expense when acquiring such tools, but Ford is proving that 3D printers are not only affordable, but that they could someday become a household answer for many problems.
To show just how fast and easy the process works, Ford shows one of its engineers using a MakerBot 3D printer costing less than $1,000 to create multiple prototype parts for a manual transmission shifter. This process allows the automaker create new parts to test in the real world. In the past, Ford has used its 3D printers to create everything from small components like the shift knob up to bigger pieces like an F-150 exhaust manifold or brake rotors for the Explorer.
Scroll down to watch Ford's MakerBot create the prototype shift knob out of thin air.

Auctions: eBay Find of the Day: Your choice of new, unregistered mid-2000s supercars
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Porsche, Ferrari, Luxury

Not flashy enough for your tastes? Stroll on down to West Hollywood and you'll find a similarly untitled 2004 Ferrari Enzo up for grabs with a sticker of $1.8 million. Technically a Euro-spec car, the Enzo isn't legal to operate on US roads, but could be modified to satisfy Uncle Sam with a little effort. The seller calls this car the "last brand-new Enzo in existence" and with 175 miles on the clock, that may be a true statement. You can head over to eBay Motors for a closer look if you're feeling spendy.

NASCAR revises competition personnel structure
Superspeedway Testing Key in Developing Rules Package For 2013 NASCAR Fusion

• The Talladega test represented the first on-track appearance for Penske Racing with Ford Racing since it announced earlier this year it would be returning for the 2013 season.
• The 2013 NASCAR Fusion will make its highly-anticipated debut in competition during Daytona Speedweeks, which begins with the Daytona Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 16 and concludes with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24.
DEARBORN, MI, (Dec. 19, 2012) – It’s only been a month since the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season came to an end, but teams and fans alike are already looking forward to what lies ahead next year with the debut of cars like the all-new 2013 NASCAR Fusion.
And while many will be taking a break to celebrate the upcoming holidays with family and friends, most race shops will continue humming as teams build and prepare the new models for competition. The primary focus at the moment is Daytona Speedweeks, which is only two months away, and getting ready for the season-opening Daytona Shootout and Daytona 500.
Besides having a new Fusion to run with in 2013, Ford Racing will also welcome Penske Racing back to the program. Car owner Roger Penske is coming off his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in 2012 as driver Brad Keselowski captured the crown in only his third full season. The Penske organization, which also includes drivers Joey Logano and Sam Hornish Jr., got their first on-track work with Fusion during a recent test at Talladega Superspeedway.
“Ford probably did the best job in terms of what NASCAR wanted,” said Hornish, who handled driving duties at the test. “NASCAR gave them the opportunity to give their race car a little bit more of the look of the actual street car. If you basically slinked up your car and made it into a street race car, this is what it could look like. I think they did a really good job of that and bringing out the character of the car.”
Vice President of Operations for Penske Racing, Mike Nelson, agreed and said, “We’re excited about the Fusion and the way it looks. There’s a lot of buzz about it in the garage and in the shop, so it’s been good so far. It means a lot to the fans and it means a lot to us as well. It’s nice to be able to look at the street car and look at the race car and see the similarities between the two. They’re identical and it’s cool for everyone.”
That individual brand identity among manufacturers was a key element toward instituting this new-generation car, but questions about components like the cooling system was one of the main reasons for having the Talladega test.
“It’s been a challenge to get all the correct features in the car within the design parameters and still having the car competitive,” said Ford Racing aerodynamicist Bernie Marcus. “At the end of the day you can have the best-looking car, but if it doesn’t work on the track, that’s not going to be good so we have to have both. We have to have the looks and the performance.”
Finding the right balance that will allow the cars to remain competitive and put on a good show for the fans is NASCAR’s ultimate goal while making it to victory lane and winning championships is the primary focus for Ford Racing officials and its teams.
“There’s been cooperation to get to the end goal of making the cars look the same on the race track,” said Pat DiMarco, Ford Racing NASCAR program manager. “We’ve done that over the past few months and now we’re working towards our goal of winning the Daytona 500.”
Ford Racing has won the Daytona 500 two straight seasons and three of the last four overall. The next chance for teams to test their superspeedway cars will be Jan. 10-12 at Daytona International Speedway.
Video of the Talladega test can be found at this link: http://youtu.be/EH4eAaveihU

Mercedes-Benz CLA revealed via diecast model
Filed under: Sedan, Mercedes-Benz, Toys/Games, Luxury

Having already seen the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class sitting out in the open fully exposed, in what appear to be leaked press pictures and even some official "spy" shots straight from Mercedes-Benz, we weren't sure how much more of the car we could see before its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in a couple weeks.
Now we know... Indian Autos Blog now has some images of a diecast model showing a scaled-down look at the car in full production form, and while we don't know what company produced this model, it is very highly detailed.
While the recent alleged press shots show what appear to be either a thinly disguised concept car or the CLA45 AMG, these shots of the 1:18 scale diecast are likely are best shots yet of the car in its base form. Pay close attention to the less flashy fascias and wheels, and, more importantly, the detailed look at the inside of the car. Based on what we see on this model, most of the CLA-Class interior will be carried over from the A-Class hatchback, and, like the larger CLS-Class four-door coupe, it will have a four-passenger seating configuration.

The Dale Jr. Foundation Continues Fundraising Success in 2012
“It was another great year,” said Earnhardt Jr. “The people who work for TDJF are some of the hardest-working people in my entire company, and I want to thank them first and foremost. I also want to thank anyone who contributed to the raising of funds this year, whether it was through in-kind donations, purchasing raffle tickets, or bidding on auction items. All of it contributed to helping us achieve our goals.”
Headlining the fundraising initiative was the second annual “Driven to Give” Dinner and silent auction. Hosted by Earnhardt Jr. and ESPN’s Marty Smith, the dinner brought more than 300 guests to the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville, N.C., where country music artist Kellie Pickler performed a special concert. In addition to the silent auction, attendees enjoyed raffle prizes and a Q&A session with Earnhardt Jr. A special raffle also allowed a handful of fans to attend the closed-door event.
Playing off its 2011 success, TDJF brought back the “Win Dale Jr.’s Ride” raffle, where more than 7,000 participants purchased tickets that offered the chance to take home Earnhardt Jr.’s own 2011 Chevrolet Camaro convertible. The winner was Debbi Atkins from Frisco, Texas. Atkins was a special guest at JR Motorsports on Oct. 30, where Earnhardt Jr. hand-delivered the keys.
“Each year we strive to further The Dale Jr. Foundation’s mission of providing resources to underprivileged youth to improve their confidence and education,” said Kelley Earnhardt Miller, general manager of JR Motorsports and vice president of The Dale Jr. Foundation. “Each year we seem to exceed our expectations. It’s a tribute to all the great people involved. It takes a ton of hard work from many different people to make the fundraisers a success, and it goes a long way in making a difference in people’s lives. For us, that’s what it’s all about.”
Finally, ride-along experiences with Earnhardt Jr. at Charlotte Motor Speedway were offered to TDJF partners and donors. The 10 recipients of the experience and their guests visited the speedway on Nov. 13 for a three-lap ride with Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew Chevrolet. The group was also privy to a Q&A session with Earnhardt Jr. and Kerry Earnhardt, photos, autographs and individual DVDs documenting the experience.
The funds raised from the three events will be distributed through TDJF’s five categorical avenues of giving: hunger, education, empowerment, wellness and hope. All totaled, more than 20 non-profit charities will benefit from the funds, including Barium Springs Children’s Home, Blessings in a Backpack, Press on Fund to CURE Childhood Cancer, the Make a Wish Foundation, Mooresville Soup Kitchen and the Special Olympics.
