FIA clarifies defensive-driving rules

The FIA, motorsport's ruling body, has issued a clarification about the defensive moves allowed in Formula 1 from the 2012 season. The governing body had stated at the end of last year that, from the upcoming season, drivers would not be allowed to move back onto the racing line after having moved off it to defend their position. On Wednesday, the FIA issued the new sporting rules, which state that drivers will in fact be allowed to move back onto the racing line, but leaving enough room between their car and the edge of the track when approaching corners.

The top 20 MotoGP stories of 2011

The 2011 MotoGP season saw the end of the unloved 800cc rules package, and runaway title success for Casey Stoner and Honda. But the headlines were dominated by two Italians - one an established legend struggling for form, the other a potential future legend cut down in his prime - as the tragic death of Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia and Valentino Rossi's tribulations at Ducati became the stories for which 2011 will be remembered. Such was the interest in Rossi and Simoncelli, big topics such as Jorge Lorenzo's unsuccessful title defence, Suzuki's departure from MotoGP and the threat of a rider boycott of the Japanese Grand Prix failed to make the end of year top 20 most-read MotoGP stories on AUTOSPORT.com

The third round (of four) at Summit Point this season featured the circuit’s Jefferson layout, but unlike the Week Three visit, the sim racers contested the circuit in reverse. Gary Busey Kia Ad

The list of things Gary Busey hasn't done for money seems to be growing smaller by the minute. A string of Kia dealerships in Pennsylvania and Texas hired the actor for a series of advertising spots. Each clip features that unique Busey flare we've all come to know and be terrified of. From what we can tell, informing your salesman that Gary sent you can garner you the best deal possible. That's likely because most sane sales people are worried Busey could come storming through the dealership wall at any moment.

The ads are 100-percent bizarre in that special train-wreck kind of way. We've picked a few of our favorites for viewing after the jump, but you can head here to see the full gaggle of Gary Busey Kia ads. It's worth the trip.

Breaking: This is the 2013 Dodge Dart [w/video] [UPDATE]

2013 Dodge Dart

Chrysler's slow striptease of its pivotal new Dodge Dart sedan has apparently gone on longer than the Internet can stand, because the embargo has started to break, giving us these full-bleed images and video of the handsome new C-segment sedan.

Revealed here in aggressive R/T guise and Limited trim (the white model), the Dart appears attractive and well-balanced to our eyes, looking almost like the Dodge Neon never stopped being developed. That might sound like a slam to some readers, but the Neon was a quick and entertaining small car in its heyday, with buoyant looks and attitude to spare. At a glance, the Dart appears to capture some of that energy but add in heaping helpings of much-needed refinement.

Chrysler has already promised a range of powertrains for the Dart, including three different engines and a trio of transmissions (including an optional nine-speed automatic!). Power will come from the automaker's range of new Tigershark small-displacement engines, including a 2.0-liter, 16-valve four, a 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo and a 2.4-liter MultiAir.

The Dart's underlying platform is expected to be a much-massaged version of the chassis underpinning the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, with 68 percent of its wider and longer architecture comprised of high-strength steel.

We'll know more when the silk comes off this Dodge at the Detroit Auto Show in just a couple of days. For now, check out our high-res gallery and see the B-roll video after the jump.

UPDATE: Dozens more photos added to our high-res gallery

Flat track ace, and current NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) driver Josh Berry captured top honors on the week.  A constant threat whenever he races, Berry positively thrives at flat tracks . . . as this week demonstrated.  Berry heads a rather unusual top five with Brendan Doyle coming home second, followed by the surprise of the week, Brodie Kostecki in third. Kostecki is an [...]

The next BMW M3, due in about two years as a 2014 model, will probably be propelled by an inline-six delivering more power than today’s 414-hp, 4.0-liter V-8. Report: China aims to slow foreign investment in auto market

Chinese FlagThe exponential growth of China's auto market has left many automakers licking their lips at the thought of rampant profit. Recent years have seen the country's government spur foreign investment with various incentives, including reduced tariffs on imported manufacturing machinery. According to Automotive News, that's all about to stop. China has said it will cease encouraging foreign investment in a move designed to promote natural growth in the sector. The country saw automotive growth drop to one tenth of what it was in 2010.

That's not to say China is putting a stop to all aid to foreign automotive investment. The report says China will still encourage foreign automakers to develop green technologies within its borders.

Automakers from General Motors to Toyota and Volkswagen have all focused more heavily on the Chinese auto market in recent years. Honda recently began producing Fit models in China for sale in Canada as part of an effort to move more of the company's production out of Japan, as well. Similar strategies may become less cost effective as China makes it more difficult for foreign companies to invest in manufacturing.

Report: What will happen to automakers if the Euro zone implodes?

Euro currency symbol illuminatedFiguring out post-doomsday scenarios can make for hours of fun, but short of a cinematic "Kill them all!" they're rarely that accurate. That's because we never know which entrance doomsday is going to use, and the big doomsday is often followed by little doomsdays (as this year's Japanese earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown should have taught us yet again). Still, that hasn't stopped Automotive News from taking a look at what might happen to European carmakers in case Italy, Spain and Greece leave the euro zone.

One scenario sees the German automakers suffering but Italy's Fiat faring slightly better. A strong euro, or if the zone completely implodes, an even stronger German Deutsche Mark would cripple the export earnings of Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz by double digits. Conversely, a weak Italian lira that could be further devalued and printed at will might make Fiat more competitive against its northern rivals. Or maybe Fiat wouldn't do so well, since consumers would be practically allergic to major purchases, and the already soft demand in Southern Europe might crater such that "There might not be an Italian-made Panda."

In Europe, the prediction is that there would be no winners, not even Spain's Seat, which, like Italy's Fiat, might benefit from currency devaluation. The brands with a chance of reaping some benefit: Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota, whose industrial economies are safely distant from the economic fallout. From a purely industrial standpoint, that's reasonable - but if Europeans are scared to buy Fiats and no one knows what currencies are really worth from week to week, we suspect there will be plenty of pain to go around for everyone.

Filed under:

We are nearly at the end of 2011, and that means another 365 days of driving the latest cars and attending automotive events around the world. Of course, we constantly have our cameras at our sides so we can share everything with you, and we take a lot of pride in bringing you beautiful, high-res images of all the cars we come across, whether it's one that just debuted at an auto show or one that just spent a week in our garage.

As has become tradition here at Autoblog, we've spent the last few weeks going through our archive of images to select the very best photos that we captured with our own cameras from the last year. We've carefully chosen our favorite 100, which you can see in the gallery above. We've also included links to the article in which the image originally appeared, in case you want to see more photos of the car or event.

We hope you enjoy viewing the images as much as we did taking them and putting them together. If you want to see our favorite images from previous years, you can view our galleries from 2010, 2009 and 2008. Enjoy!
